Random Lockups with BF2

BF2 has run perfectly on my machine for a week, not a single lockup or hiccup. I am running with most settings on high, except for the textures (low), dynamic shadows (off), AA (off), and one of the other performance hogging settings on off. The lockups occur seemingly randomly, anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes into a gaming session. I've played on several different servers.

One thing I did change before the lockups was to enable 2xAA. I enabled it, read the message stating I must restart the game for the setting to take effect, *did not restart the game*, played for two hours straight, then locked up. Upon hard restart (alt-tab, windows start button, ctl-alt-del all don't work), it locked up 2 seconds into the game. Tried again, same result. Then, I put AA to off, and it began locking up 30 seconds to 15 minutes in, as it does now.

I like the game and this is really annoying!

My specs:

AMD 3500+
eVGA 6800GT
Gigabyte nF4 939 non-SLI
Audigy 1 sound card

Everything has the latest drivers.

Many other people on other forums seem to have the exact same problem - all of it starting within the past few days. Re-installing did not help, nor did installing the retail version.

Clearly a conspiracy.

This happens to me at times also. Good performance in game, but really slow on the server list. Also encountered similar no-alt-tab no-ctrl-alt-del situation.

Also, whenever I quit BF2, computer becomes extremely slow.

Have you used that shortcut trick to force a resolution such as 1280x1024 on BF2 by any chance? I did that and after that the game would freeze randomly on occasion, often 30 seconds to 15 minutes into a game as well, but not always. It didn't happen often enough for me to make a connection at first, but then I suspected that might be the problem. I set the shortcut back to normal and now run 1280x960 with black bars on the top and bottom of my screen. It hasn't frozen since. Try doing that and see if it helps.

New to the boards, just thought I'd chime in and say that I have exactly the same problem as the original OP. Very frustrating, hoping a patch is on it's way soon.

I've tried reinstall, reinstall mobo drivers, graphics/sound drivers, etc. It feels alot like my vidcard is overheating, but after reading so many others have the same problem, I'm doubting that's the problem.

ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
ATHLON XP 2.8
BFG GeForce FX 5700 OC
Audigy 2ZS

I fixed it by wiping clean the video drivers and rolling back to my old ones (71.89 iirc). Yesterday, I wiped 71.89 clean and moved up to nVidia's official release of 77.xx.

Use Driver Cleaner.
