Random LAN problems on new build...

I am having intermittant problems with the LAN connection my newly built PC. I am connected to a cable internet connection via a router, which splits to three computers in the apartment. Every once in a while (two or three days), the connection to (just) my computer drops off completely. I get the "a network cable is unplugged" warning from windows. This happens completely randomly from what I can tell, whether I'm using the internet or not. Working with the network control panel in XP does nothing...the wizard will freeze up and the control panel will say that the connection is there and connected, yet I really have no connection. Then, later, the connection will "re-establish" itself for reasons that are beyond me.

I am using an ethernet connection on the Asus K8N-E Deluxe MB and am wondering if it's bad. I have recently switched to a Netgear FA311 to try to solve the problem. Any ideas on why this is happening? My drivers for the MB are up to date. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to update the firmware on the router?

I had the same problem once, and it was the firmware. Also, is this a wireless network, or wired? If it is wireless, it could be interference from something closeby.

🙂

If your getting a network unplugged notice then I'm guessing it's a hardware problem. Have you tried another cable yet?
