Random Holocaust question...

I was just wondering, in all the photos you see of holocaust victims, they are extremely gaunt from starvation, but African children who starve all get those giant distended bellies. Why is it that people in the labor camps did not get like this? There must be a good scientific explanation, but I can't think of it off the top of my head...

African Children are being fed... but their food lacks a protein called albumine. That causes an inflammation of the liver. Food produced in central Europe must've not lacked this protein, so that's why we don't see that bloating.

That Band of Brothers episode is still hard for me to see... Soldiers have to keep em on that diet for some time to prevent them from eating to death... Sad...

Disturbing comment on that episode:

Vets from Easy said that the actors playing the Camp survivors were no where near as bad looking as the actual survivors were... and were really only as skinny as the soldiers were at the time (I can see how a soldier would be skinny as a stick after 2 years in and out of battle).

They mused that it must be hard to find people who are actually as skinny as the camp survivors were

Band of Brothers is an awesome series...that episode is really sad...the Germans were teh evil/racist for what they did...the episode tonight is one of the best...nothing like ending the war!

Hypoalbuminemia does not cause an inflammation of the liver, it causes ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity) and edema. Ascites would cause the stomach to bloat. Albumin levels are also dependent on the level of hydration in a person.

Also, albumin is manufactured in the liver, and is not a specific protein in the diet, it just requires a diet with adequate protein intake,
