Give us some of the specs on your computer. OS, hardware, drivers, bios, etc..

Does it crash? (Blue Screen)

Does it just stop responding?

How long does it take for it to happen?

I get hard lockups only when closing winamp or windows mediaplayer. those are the only two apps that seem to have this lookup problem check out my system rig.

My specs
Windows ME
Celeron 566
128 pc133 micron
ASUS CUV4X Motherboard
Maxtor 30 gig 7200
ATI xpert 2000 video
Turtle beach montego audio
Winmodem
52x kenwood
It just freezes,no blue screen etc.It doesn't seem to do it predictably.Sometimes soon, sometimes not for hourd. That's why im baffled. It acts like a heat problem from overclocking, but i backed the processer down and still get the lockups.

I don't use the media player/winamp all that much and haven't noticed any problems there. Thanks to you both.

I was getting hardlocks in 98se while watching .mpeg files in media player, I just dropped my agp down to 1x instead of 4x, and it hasn't locked (yet).

Hell I've tried everything else except that.

you would think that if agp speed was gonna lock your pc it would be while doing heavy 3d gaming but still havent locked it up doing that. only when exiting winamp or windows mediaplayer. MPEG stuff strange.

Ill try that trick tonight.

did you notice a drop in framerates while gameing from droping your agp port to 1x??

RSM-

It sounds like it might be a driver problem. I don't know how good the Montego drivers are for ME as well as the ATI 2000 drivers.

Make sure you have the latest VIA 4in1 drivers loaded from here.

Here's the latest ATI 2000 drivers.

I haven't noticed any drop in framerates, and oddly enough with my old agp card I didn't have these lockup problems under win2000 at 2x agp, it's worth a shot, even if there is a slight frame rate loss stability is a better goal.

my system is overclocked but there is no difference in lockups between running spec or overclocked. MPEG files whether music or video lock my pc.

Winamp and Mediaplayer only lock if I have the file playing in when I close the application. If I stop the video or song before closing the app no problems exist at all.

I tried moving the agp speed to 1 using the ali agp tool for windows but still didnt work.

there is no setting in my bios to change the agp speed.

even tried underclocking.
