random disconnects with my new dsl, and only a reboot can fix it?

hey all, this is in the tech support forums as well, but i thought it would get more "airtime" here 🙂

i just installed my new dsl hardware yesterday and everything ran fine for a while. speeds were what i pay for so no complaints there but... i am running into one issue here... i will be browsing a web page and sudenly it acts like i lost connection. it will just wait for a response until it times out. the connection icon in the sys tray says its still connected, but i know its not. so i try to reconnect and it says its connected so i disconnect. but i cant reconnect until i reboot!!
specs,
win2k pro sp2
verizon dsl with westell modem.
3com 3905-tx nic

things i have tried,
i tried setting the nic to DHCP, and giving it a spcific IP addy. hasnt changed. i dont mind dialing in eveytime i need to connect online...but if i need to reboot? that sucks! :/
anythoughts?

hmm, the only problem similar to that I have experienced is that when you crash you have to turn to the modem off for about 5 minutes before you can successfully authenticate again.... I VERY rarely lose sync 'out of the blue', typically only during storms.

This has been happening with my cable modem the past two days. I can't ping anything, and a power cycle of the modem wont help. Only a reboot.

viper or amused, someone told me the AWACS that have been flying over the US doing radar sweeps has disrupted some cable services, heard anything about that?

well, i just got a call from jenn, same thing is happening again today, guessi have to deal with verizon cust support...yeaa :disgust:

have you tried another pppoe client?

also, are you sharing your connection via a router?

--

verizon's service HAS NO STATIC IP, giving it one does not help.

do you have the filters installed on EVERY ANALOG DEVICE in your house?

--

and if you route through Manhattan at all, it's fubar.

um... verizon sucks.

do contact technical support to let them know you're having problems. it's going to take a week for them to sort through everything out. if you have more problems after a month, call them again. when i had their service, my first 2 weeks sucked ass. but it was okay afterwards. I am now using a different isp, via verizon =(, and have been for the past 17 months.

Exactly why I gave up on Verizon DSL. No offense to them, but they suck. I was on the phone with their tech support at least once a week. Especially cuz of sync problems and dropped connections.

Goodluck and consider switching to cable.

trust me , if cable were available here, i wouldve taken that in a heartbeat! i was never too fond of the idea of dsl, but ih ad no choice, it beats 56k. but we'll see if we can fix this drop out issue.

I know the answer to your question.

It's Verizon DSL.

Don't bother with them. They'll never help you out. That is why I dropped them and got cable which I love but had my first outage last night (in 4 months).

There is nothing you can do about random disconnects with Verizon. The answers don't lie on your end.

My suggestion to you is to tell them that you are getting random disconnects and it is highly likely they have a loose connection at their CO switch. Ask them to reseat your DSL connection. If you get a sympathetic technician, they just might help you.

Or you could continue to have problems like I did and call up every day for 2 weeks and be put on hold for hours each time (I probably spent 24+ hours on hold) and be told 2 weeks later that they had no records of me ever calling. Mysteriously, my DSL line came back up 2 months later.

Hmm. My cable modem has been stalling for the last 4-5 days also. I can't ping or do anything. I found that if I disable the connection and re-enable it, everything comes back on. Try that.

Same thing happens to me with my Win98 machine and SWBELL dsl. Every other time or so that I use the DSL, it will act like its stuck loading a page for about a minute, and then bam.... the "Network has been disconnected" error or something like that pops up... and asks if I wanna reconnect. IF I say yes and try, it will not be able to reconnect... only after i REBOOT, can I get back on to DSL. LAME.

Sometimes it just hangs for a short time while loading a page and then all the sudden... WHAM... it loads. But both behaviors act the same... so I can't really tell if its gonna load or disconnect when I see that problem.

I have Internet Exploder 6.0

everyone i know that has DSL has had problems... this is what happens to me

my internet will die every so often.. sometimes for a few hours, sometimes for a few minutes... but for some reason most of the time i will stay on AIM and still be able to talk and stuff... other than that everything just stops working. if i sign off aim i wont be able to get on until the internet works... its like every active connection i have before the "disconnect" will stay alive, and every new connection wont work... i have no idea why that would happen (and i cant ping anything)

im good at making company's give me whati pay for. @home had a problem one summer with my other connection in a different city, and i made them tear down the line and replace it with a new one on my street, that and my line to the house as well. i get like 2500mbps now, which is much beter than i used to, buup al the time, and disconnecting me every ten mins.

damn guys, I've got southwestern bell at work and at home (3 different connections, 1 router, 2 modem; springfield MO) and I've never had any of these problems. Mine works perfect (unless host machine crashes, then its a 5 minute wait). You guys sure you have all the necessary filters installed? Sounds like noise to me, call your ISP and have them lower your sync rate and see if that helps. On the other hand, if Viper GTS didn't have an answer, you may have some serious probs 😉
