Random computer stutters...

This is just an annoying problem, which has never happened to me before.

The problem is that when I open up applications or use some very small amount of multitasking, the computer will stutter. Mouse, sound, and the whole computer will just stop, and regain itself in a millisecond. While it's not that big of a deal besides the fact that I listen to music a fair amount of time on the computer, I just think it shouldn't be a problem with my new PC specs.

I JUST got a new Pentium4/Abit IS7-E/512mb GeiLPC-4000 RAM... this shouldn't be a problem with CPU/MEM specs, and as well my CPU load (on both simulated processors) never really peaks beyond 40% even when running everything I need.

I'm beginning to think perhaps it's the hard drive, but it seems to be in fair operating condition.

Is there a magical setting somewhere that could fix this dilema?

Thanks in advance

sound can cause the prob you mentioned.
Try uninstalling the sound drivers etc and disabling sound in bios, or maybe just disabling sound in bios and in device mgr, then see if prob goes away.
If so, then uninstall sound drivers and try to find newer ones or even re-install the ones you have.

I tried the updated sound, and even the chipset drivers... no avail though...

... but I do have some good news...

When I was browsing through the device manager, I noticed that my Mass Storage label was branded with "WinXP"... which was odd to me... I then got the drivers for my PCI ATA133 card from www.maxtor.com and replaced the Microshoft ones... and BAM... after a reboot... no more computer stutters...

Thanks a lot guys :)
