Random BSOD's during TV recording...

I recently upgraded my Graphics card to MSI 4850. I also upgraded my power supply to Cooler master 390 watt with total 12V amperage of 34A (18A+16A). I've played crysis for 3 hours and faced no BSOD's, but when I am recording TV through Media Centre I get BSOD 2 seconds after the recording starts. I am thinking of reinstalling my OS. Can you suggest something else that I can try?

Does the event log give you any information on the crash?

I'm pretty sure the video card has nothing to do with the recording of TV streams. It only gets involved when yuo playback the recordings. It may be possible that the TV card is conflicting with the new video card. Have you tried reinstalling the TV card drivers?

I'd like to clarify one thing - by recording I am actually watching TV while recording at the same time. I see some strange colours on my monitor and then within 1 second I get a BSOD. I will try reinstalling TV card drivers. Also how do I view event log?

I decided to reinstall windows. So far there have been no issues. Before reinstalling though the Event log said it was a driver error (video card driver). Are ATI drivers at fault? Aren't the latest drivers the most improved? Is there some ATI driver version that works better. I remeber I could get my Nvidia 7300GT to work perfectly only on the older 163 drivers. There was always some problem on the newer versions.

Yesterday while simply watching TV on Media Centre there was a BSOD. The event log says it was an error due to ATI drivers. The drivers that I have are the latest and there are still BSOD's. Is there any driver version that works good with 4850?

What TV recording program are you using? It may say it's the drivers fault, but it could be faulty programming that leads to a conflict with the drivers that results in a crash.

And could you right click>Save log file and then upload it and post it here?

Your 4850 may be defective. I've used the last few AMD/ATI driver versions without issues on the 4850.

You could also try removing the TV card and watching recorded TV without the tuner installed. I'm assuming that you only have a vid card and tv card installed.

@kakkoii

I use Windows Media Centre to record TV. Also I will upload the log ASAP.

@Binky

I will try removing the TV card and then watching recorded TV to see if there are any issues.

I don't know how to get the event log for the error. In eventvwr I get only binary numbers as details for errors. Just before writing this post while I was watching TV I got a BSOD and I noticed there was something related to atieclxx.exe on the screen but before I could read it completely my computer rebooted. I could not try out removing the TV card because the longest TV recording that I have is 5-6 minutes. I'll have to get a recording from somewhere else to see if I get errors without TV card. Is there any website where I can get ATI drivers according to their date of release? I think I'll give it a shot to see if there is any stable driver. Also are the modded drivers that are available on the net safe? Has anybody tried them?

By chance are you using a Hauppauge 150 and a 64 bit OS?

If so, thats the cause...some Hauppage tv tuners (the 150 for sure and I believe a few others) give BSOD and other weird issues under 64 bit OS' due to the lack of 64 bit drivers.

I have Hauppage 150 l.p. Allright, but I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I've been using this TV card for over 3 years and with Nvidia 7300GT as the graphics card - I got no BSODs till now when I installed MSI 4850. I am also running Windows 7 and Windows XP Media Centre Edition on my PC. I could also check on both to see if I get BSODs.

This is the screenshot of the eventlog. The Highlighted line is the time I experienced the last BSOD. Note: Date is 6/6/2009 when it should have been 14/6/2009. The time is correct

This is the Log File.

@SolMiester

No way it could be my PSU. It has 1 18A line and 1 16 A line. If my PSU was at fault it would have given me errors when I'm playing Crysis. Crysis has never crashed or given any sign of doing so.

I tried it on Windows XP Media Centre Edition and it gave me an error within 10 seconds of watching TV. I also tried it on Windows 7. Surprisingly there have been no errors till now - I'm still testing it. It has been running for over an hour now. I did not install drivers , instead Windows 7 did it on its own. Windows 7 is 64 bit.

Now I only have to remove the TV card and try it on Windows Vista.

If you can't find the answer, try posting over at the greenbutton forums. There are many more people there that are experienced with TV card issues.

I don't see anything weird happening on the video..

Also, could yup save your log file again please, but this time choose the type as TEXT FILE. Because the EVTX is messed up, seems to be incompatible with XP Pro.

Just keep looking at the black bars on the top and bottom. Don't you see some multi coloured dots? If you don't then I think its my Graphics card at fault. I'll get a replacement then.

I noticed a very quick flash of a white chopped up line at the top of the video around 18 seconds in, but that's it.

Could you upload the log file the way I asked though, thanks.

if ATI drivers cause the TV tuner to BSOD, then get an nvidia card or replace the tuner in question..

win7 might also help since it allows for greater seperation and parallelization of video drivers.
