Random BF2 crashes

I posted this over in tech support but got no replies... perhaps its a software problem?

My roommate is running a P4 3.0ghz with 1gb ram, and a 6600gt AGP. He gets random crashes to desktop with battlefield 2. Other games that are less intensive seem ok. I'm totally stumped. We updated the nvidia drivers, have the latest patch for BF2. However, he only has the 300W psu his system came with. A little underpowered, i think, considering it shipped with 2 HDDs in raid 0, 2 optical drives, and a 4200ti.

So all I can think of is replace the power supply... it couldn't hurt anyway. Any ideas?

Seems like it could be power supply but I don't know with a TI 4200.... Try taking the sound rendering down... go to Start-> Run -> type in "Dxdiag" and hit OK. -> click Sound tab -> take the slider from "Full acceleration" down to "Basic acceleration". This used to help on a LOT of games I would play that crash so it's probably worth a try. That's all I can throw in help wise.

Thanks man, I'll try that. Sorry my post might have been a bit confusing, the system came shipped with the 4200ti, but now has the 6600gt. I was just trying to emphasize how much stuff was depending on that little 300W. 🙂

Yeah... Depending on how much time it takes for it to crash you could maybe swap it out with your PSU and test it for a little while and see what happens. Troubleshooting is always fun! :frown:

300w may or may not be sufficient depending the quality of it. As said, swapping it out with something better will tell you if thats the problem or not.

If that doesn't fix it I'd next try burning memtest86+ to a CD then boot it and let the tests run for at least a couple hours. I had BF2/SF crash on me randomly and after memtest brought up a few errors, I swapped the DIMM slots and upped the voltage to 2.6 V and no more crashes.

Depends.... Heat on what? It could also be the heat on the processor but I believe that most motherboards have onboard beepers that beep out a signal when the processor gets too hot.
