RandMcNally StreetFinder GPS for Laptop PC for $24.50

😎🙂
I found "RandMcNally StreetFinder GPS for Laptop PCs" for $24.50 at Local Staples(Atlanta, GA).
It was marked as Clearence.
As I understand, it is a GPS Module and Software for Laptop PC.

On the RandMcnally site, System Requirement says - it is not compatible with Win2000.
But Its FAQ says, it works.

Anyway it looks like a HotDeal for $24.50. I could not find this on Staples.com

I got a Rand McNally GPS unit for my Palm, which uses the same software as this unit. The software is hugely bloated and largely useless. The maps are at least 10 years old. However, that's still a great deal, even just for the GPS unit. Just find some different software and you'll be rockin'.

Well, I've used a number of GPS...many that can or are interfaced with a PC.

The important factor in this unit is "NMEA compliant" Unfortunately it does not say what version of NMEA, but you should be fine.

Also, because it is "NMEA compliant" you can use it with software packages like: MS Streets N' Trips 2000 or 2002, Street Atlas USA v7.0+, and others.....although I've never used a unit that uses the PS/2 mouseport for data transmission...not sure how that will react with the on-board mouse of the system.

I suspect this unit, like many PC units, will only be a 4-6 channel receiver without WAAS suuport. It will also require you to be stationary to find it's location before moving.
I cannot say this for sure, just my personal experience.

My current GPS toy is the GPS 330x. Nice unit, pc interface is a tad bulky...wish they would use a USB port and pull some power from there.

My $.02

EDIT: Ahh ok...uses PS/2 port for power, serial for data. Didn't state that in specs from original link...had me confused! 😀

per randmcnally's website this unit is NMEA compliant, and I'm 99.9999999% sure it doesn't use the ps2 for data, just for power.

I got this GPS at staples about 3 weeks ago. Actually I gothe the last 2 they had at the madison wi stores. IT uses the mose port for power and the serial port for data. I dont know about getting the gps while it is moving because usually I stop and enter data in , cant drive and type at the same time. IT seems to work well. I averaged 70 mph today on my trip. You need to have the cd in the drive to get street level detals of smaller cities. IT works well for war driving and net stumbling too. BTW 3 weeks ago it was at this price at staples so good luck getting one.

Is it this one?

By the way, with this being a clearance item you should edit the title to reflect that.

Good deal, I'm off to Staples tomorrow to see what I can find!

villagepeople, please scan your receipt. also, if you can post sku, that would help. thanks. if anyone else
get this deal please post.

yup it uses the ps2 port for power, meaning you can use a usb to ps2 converter if necessary. all it needs are the power leads to be correct. its serial😛 and it works even when not stationary. i know cuz i have one. got it last year for this price, not a bad deal.
it works with ms streets but thats also cr@ppy software. need to find software with good voice recognition. definetly needs that when u use it in the car😛 i get by without it.. just barely😉 but with this stuff you'll basically never have to ask for directions again. so sweet.

<< it works with ms streets. >>

How? Which version?

I've got MS Streets & Trips (2001), and the damn thing won't recognize this GPS.

Works fine in the Rand McNally software, but not in S&T.

If it works with the 2002 version, I'll buy that in a heartbeat.

streets and trips 2001. the main problem was that it only updated every 10+ seconds.. basically making it useless😛 there was a hack i think but why bother. the map portion of the sceen was kinda not right for using it in the car. it was more of an trip organizer then gps tool.

i know there are some voice regonition map/3d software out there. s aw one at frys.. topo or something, i forget😛

Here are a couple ways to fix the MS Streets delay

(Sorry I can't give credit where it is due, as I forgot where I got these.)
GPS mods
15 second fix

Jumped in on GPS when the Sony SkyMap 2000 (Etak) was around for about $19 mistake priced A/R..
It has voice recognition, uses a pcmcia slot, and is NMEA compliant.
Works with all software, but even though the Sony software is outdated, I still prefer to use it over S&T 2001.

Does anyone that has one of the Etak's also have the RandMcNally?
If so, how do they compare? Is it worth getting?

TampaFlash,
Staples.com does not have this (or not available online).
Please check the First in the thread where there is a Link to it.

icantiwont,
Per Dougmeister from FW, SKU# is 437017.
Receipt does not show the SKU, instead UPC# is printed - 070609521916

By now, nation wide Staple B&M are "cleaned up" by FW and ATechers.
Receipt may not help you.
😕

The Rand McNally Streetfinder uses ETAK maps. Although it's interface is a little unpleasant, and you cannot upload map routes into a PC compatible GPS, the quality of it's maps are very good. Most people like it strictly because of the Etak maps it uses. I just bought one of these yesterday and I am trying to fiddle with it today. GPS receiver is OK, definitely not for outdoor use. The DeLorme is a little bit more rugged, but it's mapping software only works with it's proprietary GPS receiver. The Sony Etak system was pretty slick, if for nothing else than a PC Card GPS hookup.

What is the SKU number? Trying to let my fingers do the walking through the Bhm Al Staples and the clerks want the SKU number.

thanks thanks

SKU is 437017. It does work under Win2K as well, you just need to fiddle with it a little to get it to work. Pretty cool once it is running. Time to install a proper mount in my truck now for my Libretto and GPS receiver.
