Rand Paul, tea parties, and where Obama went wrong

It's really very simple. GW was already in the dumpsters. His approval was like in the 20's at end of term (EOT). So no one was really that surprised when the Bush financial services came crying for a massive tax payer bailout.
Where Obama and "Hope" took the de-rail was signing onto that Bush train wreck.
And that simple deadly mistake created the tea partiers, angry voters, and angry political candidates. Candidates likely to take over both the republican and democratic party in 2012.
No one is safe.
A win for a republican will not be a will for republicans.
A win for a democrat will not be a win for democrats.
Healthcare is not the issue. Never has been.
The issue was and forever will be that damm taxpayer funded bailout.
The bailout Obama signed onto. The nail in his political coffin of Hope.

I think it's hilarious how U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell "thinks" republicans
are safe. How he thinks the Rand Paul republicans are the good ole boy republicans.
Is Senator Mitch McConnell in for an awakening. Big time! 😀
 
it's very funny that the 'powerful' republicans can't get their guy elected in KY.

i like rand paul all the good things about fiscal conservatives and libertarians without the baggage of social conservatism.
 
If elected, the true test will be if Rand can actually get his ideas enacted into law or into the reversal/removal of some existing laws.

Rand Paul torpedoed himself yesterday by endorsing one of the pernicious evils we've essentially eradicated like polio.

There's a reason why dad gets only 5% of the vote in national elections. I'd still be surprised as hell if KY goes blue in november, but if this is day 1 of Rand's general election run, it ain't exactly off to a promising start.

I'm still shaky on the outcome but I think he can be defeated.

I did my boredom at work routine a minute ago and just went to the google new page. 2 of the 3 US news articles were about Rand.

New hero of Tea Party Rand Paul is so conservative he scares Dick Cheney

I think half of the job is already done for the Dems, now they just need to get their people out to vote, which is a task whose difficulty will probably be pegged to Obama's popularity. I think the race will really heat up in August, till then I will enjoy my summer.

Doomsday lovers just have very bad self hate. They unconsciously long for the end, and bring it about, also unconsciously. We always create what we fear. Everybody wants to retrieve the bliss of childhood, but nobody wants to remember the pain that stole it.

And of course the Democrats had to support a bailout that rewarded the execs who ran companies into the ground. They could have at least made an attempt to reign that in, but then again the Dems are in the pockets of the very same people as the Reps.

As far as Paul being "so conservative that he scares Cheney", that's bullshit. Since when was someone so far to the Right that they want to bring back troops from foreign soil? That was the bug up Cheney's considerable rectum.

Agreed on both accounts, though I imagine Cheney has objections to more than just one of Rand's positions.

He's great right up until you try to put this libertarian BS into effect in the real world. He didn't do himself any favors going on Maddow and trying to argue that Jim Crow would have worked itself out via the free market and that it was the Feds who were actually segregating people.

That shit has doomed him on the national stage and is pure wack-a-loon.
 
Im not sure how he can be so libertarian that he thinks weed should be legal but at the same time think abortion should not be. Its obvious he is pandering to his conservative teabagger base.

It's the Wall Street Bank Bailout.

That's where Obama screwed up. It really pissed people off and demoralized his Democrat supporters and fired up conservative opposition. Many of those Tea Partiers are also pissed off at conventional incumbent Republicans too.

Unlike some of those commenting here, I actually watched the Maddow interview that is linked above. And found very little to criticize in Dr. Paul's responses.

He offered intellectual and philosophical arguments against government overreach while defending the role of government in eliminating racial discrimination.

He spent a considerable amount supporting free speech rights, in the sense that while racism is a horrible thing which he abhors there should be great caution in suppressing speech that might argue horrible things.

His arguments on the blurring of the public and the private spheres are key to understanding the libertarian perspective.

Maddow is a "gotcha" interviewer, ever seeking to extract out of context statements that can be then used to unfairly characterize those she and other "progressives" oppose. She, herself, is a racist and a bigot and comes across as such with her trying to smear that label on someone that consistently has expressed no racism whatsoever and multiple times in the interview specifically rejected racism.

Dr. Rand Paul did an excellent job in offering context to someone who utterly fails to understand the viewpoint of libertarians.
