I had 512MB of PC1066 RDRAM with my Pentium 4 2.66B back in the day. I always wanted 1GB, but man was that stuff expensive.

Hehe I had 256mb of PC800 for my P4 1.4 and then later added another 128mb. It was just way too expensive.

Although Rambus is far from ethical, they were forced out of the industry by price fixing in the ram cartel.

Ya me and another unknown person in another topic got into it pretty good over this about a month ago . I new he was wrong he usually is.

Judge Theodore Essex ruled in favor of Rambus to collect royalties regarding the use of Nvidia's memory controller the other day in 1 of the 3 patent violations against Nvidia. The products in dispute are the GeForce, Quadro, nForce, Tesla and Tegra. This ruling can also result in a ban of Nvidia's chips and from products that use them. However, the decision is still up for review by full commission. This decision has cause Rambus stock to rise 72 cents while causing Nvidia stock to fall 59 cents. You can read more

What sticks. Rambus owned tech . That NV tried to steal . The Law said Oh no you don't now pay for Rambus Tech you Stole. Its going to be a Huge Check. Good for Rambus. Intel paid Rambus . AMD finely paid .

It seems many believe you can just use otheres design ideas without paying . Whys that. Intel/NV trail is the one thats going to be really good.

For whatever reason, people assume a company is up to no good if it has filed many lawsuits against other companies. What people don't seem to realize is that is the ONLY way patent violations are enforced. No government agency is in charge of that.

I agree for the most part. If they have the patents, other people have to pay to use them or they risk getting sued. I'm sure NVidia and/or ATI wants to make sure they are compensated for any patents Intel may use if Larrabee goes ahead.

Rambus -did- conceal that they were patenting tech at the same time as they were proposing it to be open and supposedly royalty-free tech for DRAM standards.

Some of the stories about this even made it sound like they were attending technical discussions to decide standards, then running off to patent anything that came up in the discussions. But perhaps I misinterpreted the depths of their weaseling.

What I read was that they were invited to JEDEC meetings in the hopes that they would agree to some of their tech becoming open (something along those lines) but they didn't bite.

This is my understanding as well, they backstabbed the JEDEC standards committee members and then sued them to hell.

If even half true, Rambus as a company going down in flames would be a huge favor for the whole tech industry. Shame no one seems able to beat their legal team.

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2006/08/rambus.shtm

the Commission complaint alleged that Rambus participated in the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC), a standard-setting organization that “maintained a commitment to avoid, where possible, the incorporation of patented technologies into its
published standards, or at a minimum to ensure that such technologies, if incorporated, will be available to be licensed on royalty-free or otherwise reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.” According to the FTC complaint, Rambus nonetheless participated in JEDEC’s DRAM standard-setting activities for more than four years without disclosing to JEDEC or its members that it was actively working to develop, and possessed, a patent and several pending patent applications that involved specific technologies ultimately adopted in the standards.

The article seems to state that this is about other patents newer than the JEDEC fiasco ones about sdram and ddr.

"The patents in the ITC Nvidia case are newer than those for computer memory that were subject of cases with Samsung. Rambus also has a pending antitrust case against Micron Technology Inc. and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. in California"

"The patents in the Nvidia case relate to memory controllers that are usually part of processors or the chipsets that support them. Both types of semiconductors can be part of graphics cards and motherboards, which connect computer parts. The complaint targets the GeForce, Quadro, nForce, Tesla and Tegra lines."

Why all the rambus hate? Without them we wouldn't have ..... XDR for ps3?

I hope Kurt Rambis sues Rambus for trademark infringement.
