An appeals board at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled two key Rambus patents invalid in September. A third patent was ruled invalid in a new ruling that landed on Jan. 24. Reuters was the first to discover it, reporting on the issue this week.
is it too early to say the witch is dead?

i was wondering why they were airing a bunch of "feel good" fluff piece rambus commercials on primetime tv in the SF/silicon valley bay area.

Can someone give me the Cliff Notes on this? Who is Rambus, and why are they bad?

Rambus used to make RAM and belong to JEDEC like all the other memory companies. JEDEC members were required agree to some royalty free cross licensing thing to be a member.

At some point RAMBUS pulled out of JEDEC for this reason, patented some memory technology that was critical to all modern memory types and started charging EVERYONE royalties. If you have a piece of memory purchased after like the mid 90s, part of the cost of that memory includes royalties to RAMBUS.

They used to be a memory development company with lawyers to protect their intellectual property, but they became more of an intellectual property law firm with some engineers doing some stuff too. They were the original patent troll company before Apple and Samsung and such made it so hip.

To further expand on that, they are JUST a patent troll these days. Maybe a bit like SCO. Hopefully, they will die off now.

The bigger problem is, there are no "refunds" from all the companies they stolen the cash from, which is a shame, since this would have forced them to go under yesterday.

So they made a ton of cash by the time the PO looked and said, 'oh, sorry, our bad, we shouldn't have allowed those patents in, in the first place."
Almost 10 freaking years to get them rejected.

Just to be fair RAMBUS did design XDR DRAM & XDR2 DRAM. But the only device you'll openly know of that uses any of this is the PS3.

Maybe now we can get some other devices actually using this ram since it's actually a good product performance-wise.

Actually the original rambus designed innovative ram and was ruined by a price fixing trust where all other makers got together and sold their products at a loss to destroy rambus (according to the court rulings who busted said trust... long after rambus failed)

Rambus already went bankrupt and it was then bought out by patent trolls who fired everyone and just used the patents to sue other companies for patent violations.

Thus, the Balrog was created amidst the depths of ruin 😛
