This is where I am at now:
I haven't heard of double rank and maybe it is in refernce to double sided. Here is what the manual says about DDR400:

Note:
If you are installing more than one double rank DDR400, the
maximum DRAM speed will automatically be limited to the
speed of a DDR333. However, the BIOS provides the option
of manually adjusting the speed to DDR400 by selecting
?200? in the ?DRAM Frequency Set (Mhz)? field (Genie BIOS
Setting submenu, DRAM Configuration section) of the BIOS.

Ifthe ram I have is "double rank" than the two sticks wouldn't even power up at all, but it would power up and boot up fine with just one stick.

original post(now i realize what dual channel is in refernce to so i know this doesn't make sense):
I have a DFI LanParty UT 250Gb motherboard and it doesn't take 2 DIMM of 512 DDR400 in the dual channel format. I was able to use one of them and everything works fine. I am just going to find a pair of single channel, but how do I know the memory I am buying is single channel? Also what memory is best to use? I am just thinking value memory right now because I don't plan on overclocking anytime soon.

There are no such things as "dual channel" or "single channel" DIMMs. Have you tried putting them in different slots? If you still have problems, run Memtest--some memory might be bad.

I need to clarify, the memory itself is dual channel. The system only boots with one 512 stick in any of the slots, not both together. I know it is just the motherboard because I have referenced the manual. There are such things as dual and single channel sticks. I have found that they are not always labeled well and I was wondering if there was a way to tell the difference.

I think what you're referring to is RAM sold in those DC packs, which is just stuff tested and certified for dual channel operation, for whatever that's worth--DC/SC are not properties of the DIMMs themselves. If you bought the memory in such a pack and it is not working as advertised, you should probably send it back, but I'd run Memtest with each stick alone just to make sure.

There are no such things as dual channel or single channel memory sticks. You can get 2 single DIMMs and run them in Dual Channel. Dual Channel is almost like a setting you use, according to how you place your memory sticks. When memory says "Dual Channel Pack" its just 2 ordinary identical sticks so you can run them in Dual Channel. You can buy them separately and they'll still be able to run in dual channel.

ok well all that makes much more sense to me now. I still have a question about my motherboard then. The manual mentions single rank and double rank when it refers to the memory configurations. What does this mean? Because it can only take one stick of the double rank memory, but multiple configurations of double and single. I suppose the memory I bought was double rank because only one stick will work at a time. Does this have anything to do with the speed? (DDR333 vs DDR400). The manual also states it can handle up to 2GB of the DDR400 and up to 3GB of DDR333.

Double rank...? Never heard of that term, though I have a feeling they might mean double-sided, in this case. If that's the intended meaning, I've heard of issues before in S754 regarding double-sided DDR400, though I'd have to do some searching to find out what those were...
