RAM Virgin - Please help

Please help me.

I am not a thick person usually but I am having difficulty understanding what is going wrong.

I have an AOpen Mx64 motherboard which most of you will probably know has 3 DIMMs.

My PC came with 64mg of RAM but when I have tried adding and extra 128 meg it only recognises 128 meg in total even though there are two cards in the machine. At first I thought my friend had given me a duff card so I returned it to him. He put it in his machine and sure enough it shows the full 128. He gave me another card to try and when I put this one in it does not recognise any memory atall and my machine beeps at me constantly Is there any reason why this would happen? Is there anything I am not seeing for looking too hard. From the info I have read about the motherboard it seems to be compativble with both PC133 & VC133 and the cards I am using are PC133...

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Try putting the 128MB memory into the first DIMM slot and the 64MB into the 2nd slot.

I have been told that it does not matter or should not matter which DIMM slot you insert the cards into, however if this is wrong then I am willing to learn.

The card (64 meg) was originally in the DIMM 3 slot and worked ok, I then placed the 128 in DIMM 2 and still only registered 64 mg total. I then switched and placed 128 in DIMM 3 and 64 in DImm 2 this is what caused my PC to beep at me.

Do I need to put in DIMM 1 Then DIMM 2 and then DIMM 3 to make the difference or can they literally be placed in any slot in any combination?

It usually depends on the motherboard. But most of the time, they recommend you to put the largest DIMM's into the first slot and then the next largest one in the next slot and so on... If you have your motherboard manual, it should give an example of how and where to install your RAM.

I worked on a motherboard that would only allow the use of the first two sockets if it was 64 MB or higher and only using the same in both sockets, i.e., 64 - 1 62 - 2 or 128 - 1 128 -2. That could be the reason, check the manual and see if it says anything like that in the memory.
