RAM upgrade

I need to upgrade RAM for on a Compaq for a friend.

It currently has one Stick of 128 in it with one slot empty. Can I buy a stick of 256 or 512 and throw it into the empty slot and it will be alright......

Or should I pull the stick of 128 out???
 
I would trust it in my computer, But these propietary computers (like Compaq) I don't know if there would be any coflicts........
 
How about some specs on the computer??? Although if it only has 1 DIMM now, it should be fine running with a second of different capacity.
