I'm planning on upgrading the ram on an old computer that will be used for web surfing and programming. It is a compaq running win98 with 32mb ram, 3gb hard drive, and i think an amd k6 300. The inside is so crammed that it's hard to see in there, but i'm pretty sure there's only 2 slots both occupied by 16mb sticks, which are physically much smaller than modern ram sticks.

What type of ram would this be? I'm thinking it's EDO, but i need to be sure before i order. If it is EDO, what's the biggest size i can get? If I can't get sticks bigger than 32mb it would barely be worth it since i would need to replace the 2 sticks that are in there already. Also what's a good place (that ships to Canada) to get old ram?

And finally what's a good web browser to use for this computer? IE runs really slow.

Go to Crucial.com and run through their chooser. It will ask you for the model info from your system, (like presario 5438). Even if they don't have that style ram anymore, it will tell you it takes.

I searched for my system (it's a presario 4540) on crucial.com and got no results.

I looked up the model on compaq's site and did some googling and it looks like the the max it can have is 48mb. 16mb is fixed on the motherboard, and the upgrade slot can't take more than 32mb, even though it's sdram. Bummer.
