dv6605us looks to be a pretty good fit for our needs and at a decent price.

Comes with Vista Home Premium but only 1gb RAM...need to up that to at least 2 (4 is max 2x2).

HP proprietary RAM is just nuts $100++ / GB (IF you can even find one that fits according to their "compatibility" gizmo).

The model is all but invisible on most of the major RAM suppliers charts as well.
Knowing that HP lappys can be touchy when it comes to RAM I'm hesitant to go with just "any" 667 PC2-5300 DDR2 SoDimm but am I being overly cautious??

So..................................

Before I pull the pin could someone help out with suggestions of 1 (and or 2) gig chips that have worked?????

TIA

I don't own an HP laptp but i might have something I better... i repair HP laptops everyday at my job. I see quite a few HPs with aftermarket ram of all sorts and I think your're safe using about any brand... AKA forget what HP 'reccomends' on the brand, just make sure it has the same specs (timing, latency) if you can. Hp is using the cheapest ram they can buy so anything you get has to be at least as good. One piece of advice: stay away from Kingston ram in HPs... see that stuff go bad more often for some reason.

If you have any questions about laptop in the future feel free to PM me. As I said I fix HP laptops every single day down to full tear downs of replacing mobos, etc. Don't know where you purchased it or if its still within the 1 year HP warranty but i'd buy an extended warrany if you can... the motherboards in the new HP 2000s, 6000s and 9000 series aren't very reliable.

mr. lee groves, i may be emailing you soon :p

deansdad, i have an hp. i went for the cheapest good ram i could find at the time (2x1gb crucial ddr2-667) and there were no problems. it was the first and last aftermarket ram sticks i put in the laptop. i really see no use for 4gigs at the time but if i were in the market, i'd get it just for fun :p. i know fry's listed a 2x2gb (ddr2-667 iirc) kit a couple weeks ago for like $90-30 rebate or something crazy like that. they might still have it. look around, ram is CHEAP.

btw, i thought one of my sticks was DOA when i first got it. after a few minutes of testing both sticks, i realized i wouldn't actually push the "bottom" stick (you'll know what i'm talking about when u open the laptop up) all the way in so it wouldn't recognize it. make sure the bottom stick is actually pushes ALL the way in.

have fun :D

one last thing...leegroves86 is probably right about the motherboard. i sent my laptop in at 9-10 months into ownership, and again a month later (original problem came back) and both times they said they changed the systemboard, some part of the lcd, and some other stuff. i didn't think a motherboard/systemboard would be a standard part to replace but apparently it is...

Deansdad , I have a HP dv6526ea . 2GB is quite ample I think for most stuff - I do no gaming . I added some memory and had a lot of trouble . I suggest that you just buy it with the 2GB preinstalled - i.e. at HP . Mine came with 1GB and I replaced it with 2 GB of Kingston . The Kingston support were very helpful , I must say - the best thing they said is that Kingston has a model which they guarantee will work with the HP ( KTH- ZD8000B/1G in my case ) - costs more , but this indeed solve the problems when I used it .

Thanks....one and all for the good advice.

leegroves86 - your number will definitely go in the "book" for future reference as I have a number of customers with HP/Compaq lappys and as you well know they require the services of a "doctor" on a fairly regular basis. (AC adapter jack ring any bells?<g>)

I too had heard and seen the questionable relationship between HP' and Kingston RAM so I'll steer clear - even if it is anecdotal - no sense tempting fate.

alimoalem - if nothing else, perhaps this thread got you and lee hooked up in what will turn out to be a mutually beneficial future (business) relationship.
My initial thoughts were pretty much along the same lines as yours and that's the way I'm planning to go. Worse comes to worse we're talking a restocking fee and return postage on the the chance it doesn't work. Couple that with lee's advice re timing/latency (which I hadn't considered) and it looks like a pretty safe bet.

aviwil - Starting out with 2 direct from HP would indeed be the "smart" choice - unfortunately it's not an option here (bought at the egg), but for others considering a similar choice it makes the most sense. I did see the Kingston option you describe but the cost differential was pretty significant and I just don't get that "warm and fuzzy" feeling with the marriage of Kingston and HP lappys although I'm glad it worked out ok for you.

Me, I'm feelin' "lucky" so guess I'll take a stab at the best "deal" on spec close, name brand chips and see how it goes<bg>

Thanks again
