RAM Upgrade for a Dell

a friend of mine is interested in getting a small upgrade for his dell. it only has 128 megabytes of ram in it, and it has been running rather badly out of the box. so he's interested in a RAM upgrade.

according to cpuid, the current ram he has is kingston pc2700. but it's at 133 mhz instead of 166mhz. would he be able to just buy a new stick of kingston ddr pc2100, stick it in there, and have it work? or is there something on dells that would limit upgradeability?

Yup, or just buy another stick of PC2700 or PC3200 instead. They are about the same price anyway. It will just run at the slow speed.

dimension 2400, i believe.

so your saying no matter what speed i get, it will run at 133 mhz when i stick it into the dell board?

Yes, the 2400 will always run the RAM at the slower speed.
Have him get PC-2700 anyway, as the price is basically equal. (if you want an exact upgrade use Crucial)

Edit: There is nothing to limit upgrades in Dells (do NOT buy the overpriced upgrade from Dell)

Hi, I have a Dell Optiplex GX400.

I couldn't find my system on the list. It came with a P4 1.4 and 256 MB ram. I'm looking to add another 256 I think, unless it costs as much as some websites have told me...

Any recommendations?

With the cost of over $100 it seems like I might just have to wait until I can do a new build altogether.
