Ram @ Stock Speed - DDR2 800 or DDR2 1066?

For those wanting to buy ram but have no interest in overclocking then what would be the best choice to go for?

DDR2 800 or DDR2 1066?

Can any of you enlighten me what's the difference and is 1066 more important than 800 in terms of speed when doing multi-tasking stuff?

The only reason to get 1066 ram is for overclocking overhead, or so you can hold tighter timings at lower speed. If you get a set of really good DDR2-800 then you will be fine

if you have no interest in overclocking it depends.


if you have an am2 system you could maybe get a littlemore speed getting 1066.

if you are running a core 2 based machine you probably just want the highest to saturate your bus.

for 1066 bus cpus thats only dual ddr2-533, and for the upcoming 1333 , its ddr2-667.

so yeah save some money and just buy ddr2-533/667

I'm in the same situation, I wasn't really sure whether to go with ddr2-800 or 1066 memory. I am actually in the process of building a computer and I think I might be getting a quad core, core 2 duo. So would it just be safe to get ddr 800 then, just in case I can overclock higher than expected?

Crucial also require 2.2V for their 6400 modules, wheras G.Skill runs fine on 2.0V.

Do you really consider the dumb newegg reviews ?
Most of the people writing "''reviews''" ( so called reviews ) there are semi-knowledge or usually total newbies that know nothing about hardware.
They're not D9 anymore, stated by G.Skill's own personnel.

Also...they can't even compete with any D9GMH/D9GKX kit out there ( plus the other kits are priced even lower than these )

Hey BenchZowner,

What DDR2 800 ram would you recommend then?

I am thinking you might recommend Crucial Ballistix but I am awaiting your response.

Mushkin XP2-6400 4-4-3-10 ( 996523 ) [ D9GMH ]
CellShock PC2-6400 4-4-4-12 ( not the V2 ) [ D9GMH / D9GKX ]

Any of the following will be more than good [ currently testing the Mushkin XP2-6400 which already did easily DDR2-1100 4-4-4-12 @ ~2.45V and DDR2-1180 @ ~2.175V ]

hopefully this doesn't get lost in the posts.. but what would be better then 800ram/1066 cpu or 800ram/1333 cpu or 1066ram/1333cpu? 3-5 year life span
the reason why im asking here, is trying to get as much info for my upgrade im planning without having to post like 2-3 different posts.

added question or more ram at the slower speed ie 2gb vs 4gb

I would go 1066 RAM/ 1333 CPU - practically fastest stock RAM/FSB.

You wont be able to accomplish much more OC on RAM, but at least it is the highest rated DDR2 today. DDR3 latencies are very high today, and it is expensive, too.

I would not go with 4 GB - either 3GB for a 32 bit OS, or more than 4GB for a 64 bit OS.
