Please help the ignorant....

Ok, can someone explain to me what a dual channel RAM is? I see Dual Channel Ram with Heatsinks on these GEIL and OCZ RAMS and they sell for more than what a single piece would cost. Do these dual channels act like a Raid or what?

Also I have a MSI KT3 Ultra2 Motherboard. It supports 333mhz FSB. Would getting these PC3500 change any performance using my mobo? Or will PC2700 or PC3200 do fine?

Thanks in advance!!!

Phil

dual channel ram theoretically Doubles the Bandwith between the Memory and CPU, but Converting the 64bit DDR Connection into a 128bit connection.

well, that's what i'm thinking. i read something along the lines of my explination somewhere :)

as far as buying Dual Channel Kits from OCZ or GeIL, it might be beneficial to get it as it may come in handy when you get a Dual Channel DDR MB in the future.

Don't buy OCZ, they can't keep any promises to their customers. As for Geil they are actually doing quite well and are popular in europe.

Umm might want to rethink the GeIL My pc3200 won't run its rated speed with my Soltek SL-75FRN2-RL Unless i run the ram async.

There isn't actually a "Dual-Channel RAM" per se. The "Dual-Channel RAM" that you see in the market are actually no more than just 2 individual RAM sticks that are verified to run together at a certain rated speed and timings.

These 2 sticks are more pricey simply because they are "guaranteed" to run in dual-channel mode and are supposedly sticks with higher-quality chips.

For this particular motherboard of yours, you will not benefit from any RAM above PC2700, unless you are into overclocking or you plan to upgrade the motherboard soon, in which case it's better for you to get 2 identical sticks (Try to go for at least PC3200) to run in dual channel mode. FYI your current m/b does NOT support dual channel (KT333?).
