I have a P4 2.4ghz processor with 2 256MB RAM sticks. I'm looking to upgrade to 1GB of RAM but am wondering whether to get 1 512MB stick or replace them with 2. Would my performance be fine without dual channel or should I spend the extra money to run them in dual channel?

What do you normally do with you computer? Dual channel would definitaly help video encoding. And what speed is the 2X256 you already have?

Dual channel matters a lot for P4's so I would suggest getting 2x512mb sticks to replace your current 256mb sticks. You could also get 2 more 256mb sticks. It may slightly lower performance having 4 sticks, but at least on an Intel chipset it won't back the speed off to 333.

Is this RDRAM or DDR? I know my mom's 2.4 uses RDRAM, so that is something to ake notice of. I believe RDRAM must be run i n dual channel (correct me if I'm wrong).

Buing 2x512 would be the best solution if you can afford it. you may also be able to sell your 256 sticks on ebay or FS/FT...

Yup. RDRAM must eb installed in pairs. If it's PC3200 that he has in there now, though, it's definitely DDR (RDRAM was either PC800 or PC1066).

I'd personally replace the existing RAM with 2x512MB, since you'll have even more upgrade room and less risk of instability (which can arise with lots of DIMMs). Definitely don't run 3 sticks (no dual channel).
