Hey guys, I think I messed up big time.

Registered DDR Ram and ECC are two totally different things right?

So if I bought ECC DDR to put into my Opteron system, it wouldn't work.. I would need Registered.

Correct?

no what you need to go by is the PC speed of the ram ..like PC3300 or PC 3200 and so on. ECC registed ram is alot of money there dude. I mean you can buy it you want but it's mostly used for servers.

Hey namco, he said Opteron system, not operating system (OS).

ECC and Registered are two different properties of RAM. You can have DIMMs that can do one but not the other.

Opterons do need Registered ECC RAM.

I just built a dual opteron system. Initially I ordered 1gb of ECC Registered, however it was kinda pricy. I wanted another gig, but I ordered 2x Registered but no ECC. They work fine, you would have to disable ECC for all banks tho. All opterons need is Registered, ECC is not required. If you're a server and want to make sure that 1 bit in a trillion that gets flipped because of some stray cosmic ray, then get ECC. Or you are doing lots of math stuff, cause that one flipped bit would screw it all up.

My bad, ECC not mandatory (unless specified by board's chipset & BIOS).
