Do I need CAS 2 ram to run an AMD processor with a 266 fsb??? I have 512MB of CAS 3 ram which the vender said would work fine it Athlon mobos... But with win2k I keep getting a wierd error(BSOD)
Kmode_excpetion_not_handled
Physcial memory dump...
and then my system reboots.... any body have any ideas???
Is it win2k or is it the ram???

Its the ram. Not all ram will work with amd mobos. He was prob making a general statement. If you wanna run at the 266 speed you'll need ddr. They actually both only run at 133 (hence DOUBLE data rate). This is assuming that the mobos chipset supports ddr, which it probably does. Obviously your mobo doesnt like the ram thats in there now, so I would check the specs of your mobo.

AMD recommends against using generic memory. If your MB doesn't support DDR, you can still use name brand PC133 memory, like Crucial or Corsair. I use Corsair CAS2 PC133 SDRAM in my AMD system with no problems. You should be able to use high quality CAS3 RAM also, but if you're going to buy new RAM you might just as well buy CAS2 or DDR if your MB supports it.

What MB do you have?

BTW - the exception error you are getting is a generic error handler (like the good old "General Protection Fault" in Win31) that generally points to hardware or device drivers.

Return the Ram!! I can't tell you how many people complain about ram problems with athons
that come into my computer store. I've never had any problems with PC133 ram and athlon boards with high quality ram. At the store i work at, we only sell Micron, NEC, or Infineon PC133 ram and it ALWAYS works perfectly with intel/AMD. Generic memory is about a 50/50 guess, and i'd rather not take the gamble 🙂

I agree, its the ram. With prices so cheap now I'd say return it and get a good set of RAM from a good company. Like Crucial, or Corsair, Kingston, etc. I havent had any problems with those sticks in the computers at my fathers office that I built. On the other hand, of the two generic sticks we have, only one would work in the Athlon powered computers. It works fine with my AMD-K6-3 450 though 🙂 hehe
