RAM Question - Compiling on Skylake

So it's been shown that DDR4-2666 or better is a good idea for gaming. What about compilation? Specifically Gentoo Linux. Would RAM speed/timings be as crucial (hur hur) for compilation as for gaming?

I don't know of any significant testing done for that with fast RAM in years, nor can I quickly and easily find any.
 
I've been wondering the same thing since I compile a lot of my own packages in linux.
phoronix would likely do it if you asked michael to test it.

I suspect the effects are worthwhile. I've seen pretty good compiling speedups in the past from bumping the mem controller speed or tightening the timings.
 
Shouldn't be too hard to test. Go grab the Linux kernel sources and compile everything into it. See how long it takes between different RAM speed settings.
 
Assuming you don't already have an SSD, I would imagine an SSD would be much more beneficial to compile times than faster RAM.
 
How about DDR4-2666parameter?
DDR3-1600 CL9 have same time with DDR4 3200 CL18

Check main parameter of DRAM and calculate by formula.
T = (1/f )*parameter value

ex. DDR3-1600 CL9, time is 5.625ns(n=10^-9), lower is better 🙂
