Ram problem?

hi guys i have a little problem. I got a 512mb stick ram(512MB REG ECC PC2100 CL2.5) i installed that and tryed to start my pc and it gave me 3 beeps and then nothing happes then i put my old ram back and tryed it it worked ok so i know it is someing wrong so u guys know how.

PS: do u guys know what REG ram and what ECC is do i have to do any thing to get it to work? because i never heard of REG ram thx.

ECC is RAM that is usually used on servers or somesuch.
(Error correcting)

Don't mix ECC with Reg (could that be regular), and, don't get generic ram, cos it costs you more in bs trying to troubleshoot.

What are your full system specs, ram specs etc etc - include mobo/psu/ram/cpu/pci cards and anything else on the inside of your system.

k i have a p4 1.6(dell) with 392 mb it came with 128 mb but i added 256 so i have that. and other thinks i have is a grapics card that is nvidia 64 mb mx400 and a tv tunner and others i dont under stand like MOBO and PSU and PCI srry i am new.

Ah, now i understand - you got 256MB registered ecc ram.

Basically, you don't want ECC RAM in your machine. -
Do you have the mobo manual, it will tell you what RAM is compatible in your machine.
Also, when you take the new stick out of the machine, is everything ok?

Call Dell & they can tell you exactly what memory you need for your system or go to the Kingston site and put in your Dell system model and it will lead you to exactly the correct memory you need for your system.

Here is Kingston's site. Click on the drop down and put in DELL and it will lead you to the correct memory. Then go to "pricewatch.com" to find that memory for the best price.

yeah every thing works fine when i put my old ram in and turn it on.

ECC is different, it uses an extra bit for parity measures.

Registered is used for servers
ECC stand for error checking and correction. You can have ram that has ECC, but isn't registered, and there are desktop boards that will support ECC. However I don't think there are any desktop boards that can used registered ram. Servers use it for extra stability, but registered ram is usualy slower than normal ram.
