It's got noting to do with demand... Ram prices are still in flux from the trade war between the US and whichever SE Asian country... me thinks SKorea.... is being accused of messing with them...

<< Lovingly stares at his $92.50 and $112.00 sticks of PC3200C2PT512 sticks of Corsair  😀

Want to complain about Ram prices? that 256 stick of SDRAM you couldnt give away not this time last year is now worth more than your precious ddr 😀

I don't see you whining about P4 EE chips being hundreds of dollars, or new video cards being hundreds of dollars.

"THEY FIT THE SAME SOCKET, WHY AREN'T THEY DOWN TO $5 YET?!?!?!?"

FX5900s never went down to $90 then shot back up to $220 😛

Thats because Intel sucks...everyone on AT knows it.

Wasn't expecting such hostile responses... I mean the title does say I'm ranting, why click on it if you don't wanna rant with me ;( I'm hurt....

Edit:
ElFenix, your totally right about the demand. I notice the best time to buy parts in general is around nov/oct. But why do price have to be %50 more expensive than last summer (approximately?).

They are 50% higher because they are pushing for DDR2 and want to try to slowly creep up the price of DDR1 RAM by claiming that yields are low or production cannot go any higher so that when you see the price of DDR2 you won't get as nasty of a sticker shook.

Compared to even last summer's prices DDR2 is double that at no parity in performance until its ran at around 566 compared to DDR1 running at 400. If you consider that DDR1 has now hit 600 (thx OCZ) it makes DDR2 even more limp than before.

So don't expect prices to drop back down to previous levels, won't happen. Its artificial manipulation of the market to get the customer, you, buying into a half baked technology. In other words price fixing.

Last thing I heard some of these companies are being investigated for price fixing.

Edit: By the way anyone want to guess who profits from all of this the most? No its not the RAM makers, not even Intel (although they are the runner up for pushing DDR2 since they need it unlike AMD).

Its actually Rambus.

Oh how we just love Rambus.

I can't believe I just paid $285 for a gig of dual Geil PC4200. 🙁 This better not drop to half the price in 6 mos.

Only 285?

The one I'm looking at costs $524 (Canadian) or five bucks US. =p

Seriously its best to wait to see if prices drop a little bit. They sure as heck won't go down all the way unless Micron and Co. get slaped for price fixing. Which is still possible. Not sure when the ruling on that is gona happen.

Simple economics. Supply and demand. When the supply goes down, and the demand stays the same, well, yeah... It's going to get more expensive.
Hehe. But why did they drop supply?

They didn't dropped supply, but now as the s4m33r has a job, the demand surely grew 😛

Calin
And yes, I would love some more RAM, as I am running now with 128

Aelius, I too have heard that price fixing is occuring... But I never researched it myself so I didn't want to make the claim. Have any more info about this?
