RAM PRICES SUCK RANT

There is a large number of overclockers and performance enthusiasts that frequent the forums and many of you may be scouring the web for the cheapest, most cost effective, but also high performing RAM. Like you, I am frustrated by the fact that a gig of high performance RAM will set you back an arm and a leg, and I'm sure you all remember when RAM prices were SO MUCH FRIGGIN CHEAPER. WHY DO THEY HAVE TO BECOME UNGODLY EXPENSIVE WHEN I FINALLY GET A JOB AND CAN AFFORD COMPUTER PARTS??? WHYYY!!!!! ok sorry I just had to let that out... anyone else?

Simple economics. Supply and demand. When the supply goes down, and the demand stays the same, well, yeah... It's going to get more expensive.

So it's your fault, damn it, quit your job and be happy with the Celeron 800, with 256 Megs. Just so the rest of us can have lower RAM prices.

no, it was demand. demand shoots up at graduation, slows down a bit in the middle of summer, then goes back up during back to school. drops off a lot in late sept/early oct, then shoots back up again for xmas all the way through january.

ElFenix, your totally right about the demand. I notice the best time to buy parts in general is around nov/oct. But why do price have to be %50 more expensive than last summer (approximately?).

try buying a gig of pc3200 laptop memory. christ it cost me a lot. I remember buying a gig of registered ecc pc2100 ddr ram for $120. Now 256 cost $75

I think ram prices need to drop too. I want to max out all my pcs, but i'm stuck with "only" 1GB in my main one, and 512MB or less in my other boxes. I want $50 per 1GB PC3200 stick. I also want 300GB hard drives to cost $50, and I want Opteron 2xx series to cost $50. How about $50 for an ATI 800XT?

Ok ... I may be extremely unrealistic, ignore my post please.

Point is old technology usually falls in price. The same is not so with RAM. Its hard enough knowing my stuff will depreciate so fast, but when I'm willing to shell out the bucks it hurts all the more that I could have bought 512 XMS sticks for sub 100 bucks some months ago but now they are 140!!

Big deal. You probably weren't even around a few years ago when ram was more than $140 per mb.

I remember paying over 60$ for 8mb(~30$/ea for two 4mb sticks). And that was cheap.

i posted a link to an srticle that showd there is little difference between cas 2 and cas 2.5 so you can get 2*512 of kingston value ram directly from kingston for $160. \

now, lets go back to b!tching about gas prices

Yah, I hate to tell a "when I was your age" story, but my brother and I were excited when we could get 8MB for $200.

Last week I bought 512MB registered ECC for $108 and I was happy as a pig in you-know-what compared to 10 years ago

Luxury. I remember upgrading a 486/DX33 from 4MB to 8MB. Cost $150 and change, was thrilled to get RAM for under $40 per meg.

I'm sure you remember then when RAM was truely ungodly expensive back in 92 when it was more than $50 per megabyte of RAM. To buy 512MB of RAM for $75 would have been unimaginable back then (when Doom ran great on my 486DX/33 with 4 megs of RAM).

The reason memory was so cheap a few years ago was a glut of manufacturers and overseas manufacturers sending their memory here dirt cheap. Since then, several manufacturers have left the market and the US memory companies have gotten the government to put a tarrif on the memory to bring up prices.
