bah, i coulda used that ram in my 486 server. 486DX33, 20mb ram (requires banks of 4 simms!), ~400mb hard drive, no on-board IDE 😉. bt 256k L2 😀

my other athlon box is moving from an 853MB drive to a 40 meg, since I managed to cut down linux to fit in there 😀

hehehe... 🙂
Another IrC casualty 🙂

WTF, an athlon with a 40MB hard disk??? :Q

just because it's old doesn't mean that it isn't good anymore. i plan on running smoothwall on my 486dx2 because i want a better firewall than i can get in some cheesey home router. and because i hate seeing old machines sit in the corner unused. it makes me feel bad. 🙁

<< hot damn those would go awesome in my AWE32... >>

But you can only slap in two for 8MB. I've looked for years to find a pair of 16MB simms.... No 30pin 16meggers anywhere! 🙂

I seriously have no need for more than that. That box is a webserver and a genome box. Right now, the linux distro I made only has genome, ls, mount, lilo, cat, ifconfig, ifup, and bash and the necessary libraries (like 8 of them). I'll have to see how much "bloat" apache would add 😉
Its cool fitting lots of stuff into small spaces 🙂
Benchmark of the drive 😀

<<Benchmark of the drive>>

Bahahaha... I suppose opening that site is a testament to the benchmark of the server as well. 😀 That kinda stuff is fun.

Bluemax, if you scour eBay for Sun memory, you might have some luck (didn't see any this time though). I remember also seeing riser cards that'd combine 4 SIMMs into one slot. Maybe that'd work for you.
A friend of mine was able to cram RedHat 5.2 on a Sun IPX system to use as a webserver. I was thinking of finding one to do the same. I also have a 6 disc CD jukebox (2x!!) so maybe I can have a music fileserver... 🙂

nah, the server is my main box - athy 550@750 / 256mb / 30 gig. it serves 950k/sec+ if you're at CMU.... but they recently capped the dorms combined upstream to a "mere" 30 megabits/sec... and with stupid FTP servers and P2P non-leeches, that 30Mbps doesn't work out to very much for most people.

if you use the two perl links on this page, that is the server being slow. 486dx33/20mb/400mb takes a while to run the perl script (for comparison, you can run the two executables, which end in .out vs. .pl)
