I have a Gateway 6400 that was bought a while back (4 months ago) that had a p3 motherboard. The motherboard spec on their website said it needed ECC Registered Cas 3 RAM. Here is the link to Gateway's information page:

My question is, can I still put in reguler non-registered, non-ecc ram on this motherboard? Someone told me it should work but I want to be certain.

Nope, the Serverworks Serverset LE III chipset only supports registered ECC SDRAM. The boards you might be thinking of are the AMD 762 dual Athlon/Duron boards. Those can can take up to two non-ecc non-registered DDR DIMMs.

It says that it requires Registered ecc chips, so non-ecc probably won't work. That's a server board so it's built for registered ecc chips. My board says it takes either chip, and I've used both types, I just can't mix them at the same time. Try and borrow non-ecc ram and try before you buy any best suggestion.
