I have an older compaq witha 1.8 ghz athlon processor. it only has 256mb ram on one stick and i would like to put in another to speed up the system a bit. ive got another exp. slot for ram but have some kinks. when i runn cpu-z it says that the current stick is 256mb ddr2100, but its running at 133mhz. isnt 2100 to run at 266mhz? i had a stick of 256 ddr3200 i tried puting in thinking it would just scale back to correct speed, but it just beeped at me when i hit the power button.is there a special type of ram i need for this machine or will regular old 2100 do the trick. id rather not buy it and find out it doesnt work.

-thanks :)

133MHz + DDR (double data rate) = 266MHz or PC2100

The PC3200 memory you have now appears to have a compatibility issue. Does it work if you remove the old 256MB module? Are you positive the PC3200 module is functional?

ok that makes sense. Im fairly sure that the 3200 worked. i just borrowed it from someone to test dont have it anymore. i was browsing ebay for a stick and asked a seller about it and he said something about needing "low density" ram for higher compatability. does this mean anything?
