I remember when 128 megs of ram was allway plenty but with everything getting better I think 256 should be the norm now. cant even load the Ark demo with less than 128 and it uses 400 megs of space just to load. What you all think??

chuckie, your posts are always so informative <shaking head> :|

Mustang, 128MB is the sweet spot for 98SE/ME, and 256MB+ is ideal for NT/2K. With memory prices bottomed out, I would buy now and save frustration later. I know you bought some Mosel from Skorp, maybe you can buy another stick from me. 🙂

Even if you are running a 9x kernel, you can buy for the future ! 🙂

Well, i had 64Mb of ram and i managed to scrap by.
Then i changed to 256Mb. In regular use,i usually have 100 plus free memory unused.

But once i start UT in addition to the rest...........

Yeah get some more. 128 MB is not really enough these days (unless all you ever do is read email!).

256mb is where Win98 starts to top out

384 is quite enough for NT/2K

if you're running a server, you can probably double those amounts

if you're runnign Photoshop....well, you'll never have enough RAM

🙂

I'm running Windows ME with 128 mb and am satisfied with the performance. For Windows 2000, more is necessary I think.

I'm running Win98 and see no difference in upgrading from 128megs to 256megs. But if you have win2k its a whole nother story then get as much as you can.

Ive ran with 128, 256, and 384 setups on winME and win2K ...

winMe likes 128,256, and 384 ...

win2K likes 256 and 384 a lot ... but i had no problems with 128MB ...

now im down to 256mb ... (my sister needed some ram... and i am a nice brother ... Doh!)

running with 128 @ cas2, winME maxed out with about 5 DL windows and about 7 other open apps and IE windows,... to the point where i had insufficient memory to open even the resource meter!!! so up to 256 i go, i'm still waiting for my second stick to come...

Like John said With the prices so low right now 256 cant hurt and im sure next year will require 128 + just to run most apps smooth. Im still running x98 but hope to upgrade next year.

512 🙂

but only 64 MB in my personal puter... akk! PC-66.. I REALLY need to upgrade it.. but it runs fine so i'm in no hurry...

the requirements are still dependent on what you are doing within the OS. 128MB will be enough if you limits yourself to simple tasks done in parallel ( browsing, simple image/word processing, etc). 128MB should be also plenty for most of the new PC games, although i've encountered a few that work much better with more RAM ( Diablo 2 comes to mind, actually that's the game that forced me to add additional 64MB, as the performace in Win98SE with just 128Megs was less that acceptable ).

I could stand to live with 4 gigabytes of ram but since creating & using soundfonts and editing videos & creating animated gifs is more of a hobby to me, 256-384mb is fine 🙂 (well maybe I'm just saying that because I only have so many dimm slots and only so much money hehe)

If you're only talking about running an OS...hmmm, well even Win2k runs allright with 128mb as long as you're not multitasking or editing any multimedia. I'd say the 9x kernels run well with 128mb even with multitasking but not with editing large multimedia.

Like so many have said, depends on your OS... for Win9x (not too sure about ME since i only had that in for a day... does anybody have experience in this?), you're not going to see a huge improvement with more than 128... but with Win2k, minimum is 128 (i would compare it to Win9x at 64), and recommended is 256... you'll see a HUGE improvement.

Anyways, i would buy ram now while they're dirt cheap.

I went from 96 to 224 on W98SE. I've only noticed real improvement in Photoshop and D2 (as mentioned). D2 is now silky smooth. Actually, that's why I increased RAM. Also, Nero and maybe some others now allow you to buffer to RAM. With Nero, you can select the amount of RAM to use.

Hmm... I am running three apps and my memory is down to 68%. I think 192 or above is better.
