ram for 810e MB

Will any kind of pc100/133 256meg stick of ram work in a 810e MB? What does low/high density mean? What does it mater how many chips the stick has on it? Also 810e only supports 512meg total according to intel's specs, is this because there were only 256meg sticks back then and the MB only had 2 slots? Or do 512meg sticks just not work in an 810e MB. This for an hp xt963 computer if it matters.

That's because the 810(E) chipset cannot address RAM chips larger than 128 megaBITS. That limits one DIMM _side_ (aka one rank) to 128 megaBYTES (from eight chips, no less!), one DIMM to 256 megaBYTES (16 chips, double-ranked). Now since the 810 also is limited to four ranks total, there's your 512-megabyte limit.

The highest density RAM chips are "16Mx8" technology.

So, what would be some cheap ram I could buy at newegg for a 810e MB? All the 256meg sticks say 32M x 64 -Bit.

Enter that board at Crucial.com and get the part number for compatible RAM.

I did that. But a 256meg stick at crucial is like $80 where newegg has some non-crucial ram for $40. I am just not sure if it will work in an 810e MB. How can I tell?

From some reading it looks like I need a stick with sixteen 16Mx8bit chips. Does newegg not list this information or am I missing it?

You are correct in that the "right" chips are already twice as much as current "regular" stuff. That's life - the 16Mx8 stuff is not being produced much anymore, and it's getting rare. Production focus has long shifted to chips that have twice the capacity, and currently yet again to another capacity-doubling to 512 megabits per chip.

You need to buy from a source that makes absolutely clear what you're getting. $80 is about spot on for 16Mx8.

I think I might get this. It is used, and only pc100, but it should do the trick. It seems like a good buy.
