Hello everyone,
I figured I'd download one of these RAM disk programs to see how it worked. Obviously, it's very fast and can do anything a regular disk can (except retain data when the power goes off). But, since they're so small--being limited by the amount of available RAM--what kind of applications are they useful for?
Here are some things I've done with my new RAM disk:
- I set up a 320mb one, copied Enemy Territory to it, and watched as it loaded very fast 🙂 Once playing, however, it makes no difference (naturally).
- I set up a 16mb one, wrote a program that does nothing but create empty files, and ran it to see how many files it could hold. The answer is ~11,000 (using NTFS).
- I could put SETI@home on it so it doesn't access the disk so often, but that seems pointless since so many other apps I have running access the disk regularly too.
So, I'm out of ideas. If you use a RAM disk, what do you use it for? Do these things have much practical utility?
