Last night, I made a switch from 2*128MB non-ecc ram to 1 stick of 256MB ECC ram, it is my first encounter with ecc module and well, the mobo boot up and started checking the ram...it check from 0 -> 256MB and then back to 0 and count to 256MB and again...3 times total and stop....the ram check turns out to be okay.

I reboot several time and every time the same thing happen.

Is this normal for ECC ram ?
How can you tell if the ECC is really working?

Thanks.

Did you check your BIOS to see if it defaulted to "enable fast POST". Only time my comp cycles through the RAM like that is if I disable fast POST. I usually only disable it once to make sure the RAM is okay on one of the first few boots. I don't have any experience with ECC RAM, but my understanding is it is more stable, but not as fast.

I did not find the option "enable fast POST". I guess it is enable automatically.

If I plug in the 2 stick of 128mb ram, the ram check will run once and stop.

If I put in the ECC ram, they repeat the check for 3 times before going to the next step.

My mobo is by ECS (can't remember the model), 440BX and recognized the ECC ram correctly, I guess the ram should be compatible with the mobo, it is the boot-up ram check that worries me.

btw, I am running the latest bios.

Thanks.

I don't think its a problem if you are POSTing, booting, and running okay once it gets past the RAM check. It would just annoy me though...those extra few seconds can be annoying, particularly if you need to reboot b/c of certain games and memory leaks ;)

What motherboard are you using?

I have seen the "Enable Fast POST" option on every motherboard I have used for years now. It's usually found in the advanced settings page.

In the advanced setup on the BIOS look for Quick Boot and enable that. or vice versa on your BIOS. Try that, I don't have it but I went to a site that had pics of the BIOS screen........

EDIT: That is for the SIS 735 chipset that has DDR and SDRAM support on that board.

Thanks guys,

I enable the Quick Power On( the default is off) and it solves the problem.

Thanks.
