Ram amount question.

Ok my friend just ordered 512mb of Crucial pc2100 ram for $117 shipped. I told him he should buy 1gb since the price is pretty low. He will be running the new Abit DDR board when is comes out. So that would be 4x256mb chips. A 1.4 AMD. What are your thoughts?

Win 2k I think so it should not be limited like 2k. He will game on it, he will browse, maye serve some files. Not sure what else. He will also play the same MP3 over and over and over and over on it.

<< Does his board have four slots? Many DDR solutions don't. >>

Yep the new Abit does. I can never rember the name.

Alright... I'm his friend he is talking about.

While I can see Boomer's side (1 gig of RAM is pretty cheap, compared to a year ago), I don't think it is needed. I will game, browse, do some DVD ripping, web design, programming, listen to MP3's.

I remember a while ago when Anand ran some benchmarks and he stated that 256MB is enough and the preformance gains after that are only 1% or so.

I have a feeling that is the case now with anything over 512MB unless you are doing some insane 3D modeling.

Edit: Board Name is Abit KG7

Yes I would. My main reason is if you plan on keeping this system pretty much intact for awhile. If you are going to sell it off pretty fast like the rest of your system's then I say 512.
