Raise your hand if you think Dell is s***

well, apparently Wall Street, the major capital markets, major corporations, large universities, and just about everyone i know disagrees with your point of view.

this is like a rant against walmart....("down with da' man! power to the people!)

Dell sells computer products at excellent prices.
when they have a "deal" going, you would be hard pressed to build a computer that matches their offering for the price they sell it at.

they sell fantastic lcd's at great prices.

i have purchased multiple dells for my office, my home, and my friends and family.

and yes, i have built computers, program in assembly language, pay lots of income tax, and have a day job.......exactly what qualifies you to make a statement that anyone should take seriously?

Hope I didn't offend you or anything. I was just posting because so far it seems that I have had good luck with Dell.

Honestly, I would have rather built my own machine. I would have gone with the A64 and not Intel. I just have a big problem with haveing money "in my hand" and not being able to spend it. I would have never gotten a new machine if I hadn't gotten a Dell. Hopefully this machine will last me a while though. I plan on using it to learn C++ (as soon as I figure out how to work with Dev C++).

i doubt building a car is cheaper then buying one... (yugo).

what i think is sh1t is when people who post in ignorance thinking that they are way better then others. Some people are afraid to build something. Some of them are afraid to set their vcr. So is dell a good deal for them, probably. Can they build something on their own, yea but they are those who say its worth a few bucks to not have to worry about it.

I plan on buying a outlet dell so my kids can play, and probably break it and all it cost me is a few hundred dollars, well worth not having to worry about it..

either way i myself don't like dell (i am getting a amd for real gaming) and buying this dell and gonna build a oc'ing comp later on...

to each his own..

If you think building a car is more expencive than buying one, youre a dumbass. Also those who think they are better than anyone else becuase they build a computer are dumbassess. I never said I was better becuase of it. But those acting like they got some deal thats better than building one, are fooling themselves.

then i suppose building a Expedition or a Lancer is cheaper then buying one, (damn i am a dumbass, thanks for telling me now!!) 😛

as to getting a good deal, that depends on ones needs... anyway have a nice day!

When config correctly and wait for HOT DEALS, Dell can be bought CHEAPER than what I can built. And I have built hundreds of systems over the last 15 years (okay 10 systems of my own, and 100+ when I worked for a PC Shop). Dell isn't just for the average user, but advanced users can often take advantage of Dell deals also.

true, i came across a deal last fri ..... P4-3.2Mhz, 512 mem ddr2, 160 hd (ok a 128 radeon x300se, to be swapped out) 16x dvd +/- RW d-layer and a 16x dvd rom drive... for 634.00 and in a 8400 series case.

not to bad i think.... but who am i to question such knowledge!

tell me how exactly you can build a 3GHZ intel machine /w 40GB HD and 256MB ECC RAM + CDROM for under $300? In other words my 400sc 😛 yeah no graphix but another $100 fixed that and i have a machine that kicks the ass and is incredicbly quiet all for only spedning about $400...I'd like to see something to even close as comprable built from new parts.

I've switched all my computers over to Dell (my home workstation(400SC), laptop (700m), parents pc(dimension 4700), and any new comps we buy at work) and havent had any problems...IF another company can come along and sell comprable products at as good of a price even with a customer service racket that dell has seeed to achieve(although dells is frustrating at times you can get through and problems solved most of the time) I'd be happy to shop there, i dont see it happening any time soon however (looks over to apple who HOPEFULLY is taking cues from dell, one of these days)

I get a lot of people asking for a basic PC to use for email and light graphics work... nothing major. They are newbies and like it that way. They want a no-frills PC and don't want to spend a lot of money so I tell them to go with Dell.

We've got several old GX1's.n's and a's where I work. These are older PII-III models that our IT department never did pick up when they replaced them with newer work stations. I pulled one out last week that looked like it had been carried in the trunk of a car for the past year. It's got mud and water stains on it from being in a flooded room at some point. I hit the power button and let it run for 3 days with no problem. This one was so old it still had W95 on a 4.2g Maxtor. I robbed some RAM from another GX and ordered a 40g hard drive and a CDRW for it. I plan to use it as a test box in the office. It's not a gaming machine, never was and never will be, but for reliability I can't complain.

Okay, sorry. I was typing in a bit of an angry bout, and forgot a few many reasons.

It was 128 they shipped with, you can get buy with 256. Big mistake on the numbers there. People said all you have to do is upgrade the RAM, the problem is my friend has no clue what ram is or how much he needs...and Dell should have told him he needs at least 256.
The other thing i hate is that so far all the Dells at peoples homes, that i've worked on, only come with a restore cd, so there is no way to reformat and get rid of the tons of bloatware installed. And phone support sucks...

(i'm alittle insulted that somebody accused me of stealing off of some web site...the original post is based solely of personal experience and angry.)

Lol, now you and your friend don't know the difference between 128 and 256 and between the both of you you can't install a stick of memory....

BTW, I did reformat my Dell without any problems but I have no problems installing memory. It sounds like you should be staying away from computers, perhaps you should buy a Mac.

See, I'd rather get hit on the chin, because a body shot like that stays with you like broke relatives! *Fight Night 2004 addict*

i bought a Dell a month ago, specs are:

P4 3.4ghz 800mhz FSB
1gb DDR2 533mhz
ATI X800XT
160gb Barracuda w/ NCQ
20.1" 2001fp LCD
16x DVD-Rom
Free sh!tty printer
Windows XP Pro
Audigy 2 ZS

Total = $1660 shipped

Sure I could've built a better gaming rig for around the same, but I didn't have time to go through the trouble and I don't tweak much. Besides, my video card + LCD were worth nearly $1000 by themselves, I dunno how much better I could've done.

I even exchanged my LCD three times before I was satisfied w/ the backlighting & dead pixels. Didn't have to worry about shipping charges and the replacements came less than a week after I called. After a clean format & install, I can say I'm very happy w/ my Dell and the 70fps I get in CS: Source at 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF Vsync on 😀

Geez Tom,

That's awful mean. I'm sorry I insulted your Dell. I've just had some pretty bad experience with them, and that's such a creative insult....."you can't install a stick of memory"...I'm really hurt, that cuts real deep. My self esteem is like almost gone. I had to go and put some memory into a machine to make sure I could. I almost couldn't between the tears and the shaking....you've really hurt me..........

(does this perhaps stem from an earlier childhood experience when you couldn't install your own memory?...or maybe you still cant'?...are you lashing out at me to hide your insecurities, and make your self feel big?)

Dell's are great if you are an average computer user that just wants to surf the net, listen to music, and play the occasional computer game. They are also wonderful if you are a business that buys computers in bulk for office use. Dell servers are also very well built.

Of course, if you are an ethusiast or big-time gamer that wants to have full control of their hardware, a Dell will be sh*tty for your specific needs.

They didn't send him a computer with a floppy eh? Sounds to me like your freind was too cheap to order a floppy and fiqured he'd save himself 15 bucks.

Why does everyone always pick on dell? Why no HP, Compaq, Emachines, Sony. The scheme is all the same. Advertise a computer as blazing fast and 95 percent of the world will believe you. It is hard to put down dell's tech support and price on 500 dollar systems.

Ask your "friend" for a hug, maybe that will make you feel better.

I guess that's really the question. If someone chooses to buy "generic name-brand" clothes, at say, Sears, should we look down upon them, just because we're wearing "custom tailored" clothing? (Whether we've had them expensively custom-tailored (Alienware), or know/are a tailor (custom whitebox gaming rig), or happen to be wearing patched-up rags (ancient whitebox system on the trailing edge of tech)?

That's the advantage to making your own rig, it's customized for you. That doesn't mean that some of the pre-built rigs aren't just as good, but they just don't have the same "fit" to them. Sort of.

For *most* home/office use, Dell's are great computers.

Pros:
Unbeatable value, especially in the sub-$500 range. If you'd like me to list several configs I've gotten from Dell, and try to beat them price/performance wise using Newegg/etc., you're welcome to try.
Quality parts. Intel branded motherboards, Intel chipsets, are bulletproof. Power supplies are strong, quiet, and underrated. Cases are easy to work with.
Great warranty service. Tech support from India can be so-so to great, but when dealing with warranty replacement/repair, Dell is top notch.

Cons:
Factory OS install is bloated (easily fixed by uninstalling preloaded crap, or doing a fresh install using the restore disc).
Onboard graphics mean little to no gaming capabilities (not that it matters for home/office use...children's educational titles run fine on integrated graphics). Can be fixed on certain models with AGP/PCIE8X slots.

you're cool.

your "friend" would have gotten what he needed if he had educated himself first. my dad didn't know dink about computers 4 years ago when he went out to buy one, but he researched it for about a week, found out how much ram he would need for what he would be doing, and bought a pretty well rounded gateway that still functions today.

dell even tries to make it a little easier for you by putting "Dell Recommended" (gasp) right beside certain components that they think would make the optimal build. and i guarantee they don't recommend getting the cheapest components 😉
