Well my Dimension 2400 came with 126mb RAM and it was bearable for web surfing. Of course these systems aren't meant for gaming, but I added a fx5200 pci and 256mb RAM and I can run most non shooters quite respectfully. I don't like some of the things they do, but they do it to make them VERY affordable.

Dell is fine if youre too lazy or simply dont want to deal with building a computer. I'm sure building a car is cheaper than buying one too. What I think is shit, is when people come in saying how cool their dell is and how they got such a good deal they they dont think you could build it for less. Ignorance.

Are you too lazy to troll somewhere else tonight?

The only beef I have with them is lack for AMD support. Maybe AMD can't fill their demand quota...but still. If Alienware can do it, so can they.

I just want to know if people are with me on this one.

They ship out computers with XP and 256mb of RAM. They're a major computer company, they have to have a few smart people there that know there is no way in hell to run XP and open word with any kind of decent speed with 256 mb.

They shipped my parents computer with 128mb of ram. (10.2004)

It just feels so irresponsible. The thing can barely operate with 128mb, it is continuously loading up the swap file and can only have like 2 windows open at once.

Now, when I had a spare stick of 512 around, the system became functional and I think was a good deal for a home user for basic/normal use. (fps games on dell = laff).

Right. the same goes for other branded computer too

Just be glad you people didn't live during the era of MEDY OP Computers.... those were like one of the early OEM builders. Terrible. A computer from them cost a near arm and leg and for what??! A green screen with a 20 MB Hard disk?! Dell is decent for the medium whatever. They're not the best, but they provide schools with cheaper alternatives to turn to. Dell is aite.

That would actually be detrimental to Dell. I don't think they would get their big Intel discounts if they did AMD. At that point, they wouldn't be able to offer the prices they currently do.

If that were to happen, Dell wouldn't be as lucrative (price wise) as they are currently. Besides, a P4 is more than sufficient for the "Joe sixpacks" that are buying them.

If you need an A64, you most likely know that, and wouldn't be looking at a Dell anyway.

I'm not trying to defend Dell. I'm just trying to see it from their current point of view.

Oh, and for the record... I will never buy any OEM machine for myself. I would never be happy with it. 😉

I have had nothing but problems with dell, for myself and my family. A dell laptop I had way back when got a crack in the motherboard when it dropped from about 10 inches high because of the crappy design which puts double the stress on the mobo if the thing falls on its power connector. Then my fam got a free dell from someone that came with 128 MB of RAM (this is within the last year), the thing was unable to run windows XP until an extra stick of ram was thrown in, not to mention it overheats and the psu is faulty. I know it was free, but even so shouldn't it be able to function. Other memebers of my family are what I would consider "average users" and they have had as many problems as I have. I would strongly discourge the purchase of dell, but eveyone here pretty much knows that, so warn your neighbors or something. 🙂

I just got a Dell for the first time, and have built 2 systems previously. I got an incredible deal on a XPS refurb that included a 550 dollar PCI-Express video card and a bevy of other parts that made it impossible to pass up.

So far I am extremely impressed, and certainly disagree with the OP that Dell are shit. While I enjoy building computers, I could not have built this one for what I paid. But heck, never mind what I think. In the end Dell is the biggest PC seller in the US, and whether we write how much we love them or hate them - they are getting rich and I'm not...lol

Dells serve a purpose; their deals for businesses are great, and when cousin Sue or whoever asks you what to get, they're a readily available answer which beats providing her tech support... That being said, they make me sick. I wouldn't even recommend them to anyone here, since even a new poster here is at least showing some minor tech interest by simply signing up and asking; Monarch/ABS get my recommendation for prebuilts in those cases. Sure, they have the occasional sale on an LCD, but we're talking about their PCs here. Their commercials are awful; they put geeks in a really bad light in order to appeal to the stupid masses. Their tech support has gotten awful as well since they started outsourcing.

Well, the reason i wouldnt buy a low end dell (or recommend them) is that i went to a Lan Party place and the guy that owns it fixes and builds computers. He had a dell there with a passive HS on the P4 1.8 GHz cpu. I know it's not unheard of, but come on! What kind of a manufacturer wouldnt spend the extra $3 to put a fan on a CPU like that? Especially when he told me that he's seen a few cases when the CPU and the HS accually melted together...

I like that design, nice and quiet 🙂

works fine of course

If you own a business, Dell is a four letter word synonomous with "God". They're inexpensive and simple to use for the average user. If you can build a PC and need one for your home, why would you buy a Dell?

Great thread. Glad it stayed open.

Many companies use Dell, like mine. I working on a Dell right now, a GX240. They must be doing something right if companies buy them.

I recommend people to buy Dell machines all the time. These are non-techies who don't play games and just want a basic machine to do daily stuff with. If they want to do more, then I offer to build them one. I feel very good about the way I do my business, no one gets ripped off (especially me). 🙂

I would occassionally buy Dell hot deal systems then resell them for a nice profit, and the transferable warranty was the deal clincher for the wafflers  I am certain others can remember when Dell was getting the newer stepping P4s before anyone else had them too. I backed 1 system I sold myself because I swapped CPUs since the Dell overclocked better than my retail 🙂 Tech support is meaningless when you are a techie IMHO, and if you are a biz client then you get better support than the home customers as I understand it.

"companies" buy from Gateway too (and Best Buy). 😛

and did you forget the Chrysler "K" car - expressly made for "Companies" fleets but NOT recommended to ANYone as they were a POS. There was nothing "right" about these [popular] cars. 😉

Dell used to be good - YEARS ago . . . . they are coasting on their former good reputation

I actually really like working on Dells. I've never been the biggest fanboi of their stuff, but for what it is, I like to call it the Walmart-ification of computers, they're stuff can't be beat.

This weekend, I worked on my parents P4 1.4Ghz Dimension 4600c. It only has 128MB of RAM, but for what my father does, surfing the web and checking email, it's not exceptionally painful, another 256 to 512 would help, but really, that'd just be pissing money away. Granted, the amount of bloatware they put on their computers is amazing, but really, who cares? Those of us sophisticated enough to recognize that will a) build their own computer and load their own software or b) if buying a Dell, remove that hidden partition, reformat, and then install what we want.

In addition, I bought my wife a 4700 about 3 weeks ago. I added a PCI 802.11g card this weekend in to it. Granted the insides don't look as pretty as an Alienware, but it actually looks better than my hand build system with about 20 cables running hither and yon. Their cases are great. I love the tool-less features of it. I was in and out of that thing in about 10 minutes.

All that being said, even though I don't consider myself a fanboi, I'm also using a ton of their stuff because bang for the buck wise, they can't be beat.

The run down at my house:

1 x Dell Inspiron 4700 w Dell 17" CRT monitor
1 x Dell 2001FP
1 x Dell AIO 922 Printer
1 x Dell Latitude X300 Laptop
1 x Dell Axim x50v PDA

Okay. I am a Dell fanboi. 🙂

Dell is so popular and any average person that needs a computer automatically thinks Dell. I've worked with a bunch of Dell computers for friends, and found them to be terrible. They mess with windows and fill it up with so many Dell logos i feel like i'm going to close my eyes and see them. They ship out computers with XP and 256mb of RAM. They're a major computer company, they have to have a few smart people there that know there is no way in hell to run XP and open word with any kind of decent speed with 256 mb. They take advantage of people that don't know better. (like my friend) and then when you open the case to put in the stick of Ram you had to go out and buy, there is no room for it, because they make it so nothing that isn't ordered from them can fit in the case. He had to buy an external floppy drive...because you couldn't fit a standard 3.5 in the case and they didn't send him a computer with a floppy.
I just feel that all the hype out about them is complete bullshit, they use friendly commercial to take advantage of the customer that doesn't know enough about computers to know how much RAM they need, or that CELERON is completely useless also.

Since you don't know how to install memory, Dell is for you.

Ouch! BTW, the new Delerons are decent performers so you need to stop repeating the old Celeron SuX0r0Z shat 😉
