Rain has almost no effect on my Duron. Thermal pad is all mucked up

I have a Duron 650 that I have had up to 850. I also have Rain running. Rain has almost no effect on my temp. At best it may knock off 2 degrees. What's the deal?

Also, I am getting conflicting readings on CPU temp. SiSoft Sandra 2000 says 35c, while Via's thing says 52c. That's a HUGE difference. The BIOS agrees with the Via monitor. Why is the Sandra reading so low compared to the other two? Right now I have a stock HS/F on there. It has the thermal pad. I took it off to make sure the temp probe was making contact with the CPU. When I took the HS off, the thermal pad was all smashed up and it has oozed over the sides of the die. I tried cleaning up the part that oozed off, but the pad itself is a mess. After I put it all back together the temp went from 44 max to 62 max. It's idling at 50 right now. I have a FOP32 coming soon. Until then I am afraid to OC this bad boy (650@750 right now. Was up to 850 but backed off).

go to radio shack and buy some heatsink compound. You have to have something between the cpu/heatsink to make up for poor surface contact. Or run the cpu at stock specs while you wait for your new parts to arrive. You can use rubbing alchol to clean up the mess.

Are you running Windows 2000? If so, there is already an idle process, so RAIN won't make any difference. As for the Sandra thing, don't trust SAndra's temp readings, they are always way off. Go to Radio Shack and buy some thermal compound, use a razor to scrape off the thermal pad, and then put just enough compound on your cpu die to cover it and replace the heatsink. Check your temps again, if they are resonable, overclock away!
