They've been here, this is just a different testing phase just like they're about to do with the laser gun.

Same laser gun also mounted to a high speed navy warship... main purpose was defense against missiles right?

My wife builds freaking lasers for guv'ment! Mostly just boring save the Earth type shit for satellites though. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

i thought railguns were offensive weapons, but the guy talks about cruise missile defense. is it even fast enough for that?

Is it something like a phaser?

oh nvm, its a actual bullet, but propelled by some electromagnetic thing instead of gunpowder. Video is cool

Last I checked, the production weapon design calls for a velocity somewhere around Mach 7. I think it could hit cruise missiles. It won't serve as the only use, or even the primary use, however. It'll basically be a kinetic equivalent of shells launched from naval guns that hit land-based targets. It'll require planning for the flatter trajectory though, so it won't be able to fully replace standard naval guns, which can get over hills/mountains (and still be effective).

yeah my understanding is that it's for long range kinetic bombardment of land/surface targets at a cheap cost. it's probably fast enough to hit slower missiles, especially if they are able to install aerodynamic control mechanisms into the shells (no doubt a challenge given the shock these things would have to endure).

A railgun projectile travels from 0 to Mach 7 in less than a second. Yeah it's fast enough. Mach 7 is faster than a cruise missile which are subsonic and can be shot down by AA guns.

Is that really a railgun? I'm gonna have to do some reading, 'cause I might not be sure what actually makes something a 'railgun' as opposed to...well, something else utilizing electromagnetism. Like the 'Metal Storm' thing from years ago...same concept, but no one ever called it a railgun. This is kinda like that but applied to fuckin' tank rounds. Which is pretty damned awesome.

I'm also confused by the sabot...looks like aluminum?

I wonder what will be the eventual countermeasure for this, a magnet gun that can throw it off course? Lol

aluminum can be influenced by strong enough magnetic fields, aluminum is Paramagnetic not to be confused with Ferromagnetic .

metal storm used case-less stacked ammo not electromagnets
