edit:
topic changed to request firmware repair info.

----------------------
one of my raid 0 drives went down..is there anything i can get the from the other drive? like file/folder list? small files?

anyone ever do any raid0 recovery?

also is swapping circuit boards on identical drives fairly simple?

i think spinrite whacked my drive bios or something..it was functioning well
now it just goes "BEEP...(KLANK)..BEEP...(KLANK)..BEEP...(KLANK)"

i was simply trying to get a disk surface util to mark the bad spot bad..

There are no complete files on the single drive thats still working, basicly, without the second drive, it's all giberish...from the sound of your second drive, you might be lucky enough for the freezer trick to work, since it sounds like a sticking head. put the drive in a ziplock bag, squeeze out all the air, seal it, and stick it in the freezer for about an hour. Then pull it out, plug it back in, and get as much of the important data off of it as quick as you can. You can also do what I did, and stick a frozen meatloaf on top of it to help keep it cold a little longer(yes, I really stuck a frozen meatloaf on top, not kidding).

"Maxtor 6Y160P0"
"Maxtor CALYPS0"

why does the Highoint controller bios now announce the drive as "Maxtor CALYPS0"
it has always announced "Maxtor 6Y160P0"

I was curious how you use SpinRite with a RAID 0 array. Here's the info, from GRC.COM:

How does SpinRite operate with RAID arrays?

A "thin" RAID controller in a striping, RAID-0 configuration:
SpinRite is able to operate upon drives behind a thin RAID-0 controller configuration without any modification. By a "thin controller" we mean a controller like an add-on Promise controller, or typical RAID controller built into a motherboard. Specifically, one that is not providing its own high-end microprocessor with megs of independent RAID caching RAM memory. Since RAID-0 does not offer the mirroring redundancy of RAID-1, SpinRite's reads and writes are spread out and "striped" between the RAID drives, but there's still a "one for one" relationship between virtual and physical sectors, so SpinRite will be able to operate without requiring the drives to be temporarily removed from the RAID configuration.

And, in fact, for SpinRite v6.0, which uses the RAID controller BIOS, RAID-0 drives can not be removed from behind the controller since one of the drives will contain a partition table describing a "virtual drive" that's larger than the actual physical drive. SpinRite will see this and refuse to proceed since it always chooses to do nothing unless it's completely certain of what's going on.

Apparently you _can_ reflash the firmware, but the binaries are apparently hard to get. It's the first thing I'd try. People have had success (gently) hitting failed drives against a wall to dislodge stuck components. And there's the freezer trick.

You can also try getting another identical drive and either swapping the boards or the platters.

thx for the reply..

the "Maxtor CALYPS0" makes me think frezing and banging wont work...unless a hardware issue caused the firmware corruption..

i did try the freezer ...no luck.

the only software i found for maxtor firmware corruption repair is like $400..
