technically, on some controllers you don't need matching drives. but it's a VERY good idea to do so. as for the benefits, if you're using a RAID-1 mirror (which is what i do) you have data reduncancy, if one drive goes bad you have an identical duplicate on the other drive. as for RAID-0, it will offer higher throughput/sustained transfer rates. this is particularly useful for digital video and sound editing/production. other than that, i'm led to believe most enthusiasts do it for braggin' rights or to get bigger I/O marks or some other benchmark number.
