RAID? What is the best solution? And is it really worth it?

I've been reading a lot about RAID lately (for some reason it seems like I'm two years or more behind the rest of you on computer technology)and I was wondering is it worth it for the average gamer and FTP user to buy a RAID card and go through the trouble of setting it all up. I'm buying a second HDD anyways so I was thinking about getting a RAID card. What do you RAID experts think?
