RAID vs regular IDE

How much faster is a RAID setup? Im a newbie to this, but right now I have a maxtor 160gb and an IBM 80gb. IM upgrading the IBM hdd with another maxtor or WD 160gb'er.

Also, for a RAID setup does it have to be same model or can it just be same speed/size? (160gb, 7200 rpm, 8mb cache)?

Any help would be great, thanks

yes 2 drives. But they don;t have to be identical, its just that if they aren;t it will be the size of the smaller one x 2. (a 160 and an 80 would end up 160). also if they are not very close, you loose a lot of speed. If you end up with two 160's both Maxtor, same rpm and cache size that would work fine. Make sure you have a good backup policy in place.
