Raid Technology: Worth it? uses?

The motherboard that I have now has the capability for Raid (Abit KT7A RAID), but I only use it because I have the need for 5 IDE ports. But I was thinking about getting either the MSI K7T turbo limited edition w/ Raid or the MSI K7T266 Pro-RU. The problem is reviews say that you shouldn't get this (K7T266 Pro-RU) board if yu're not really thinking about utilizing the Raid functions that it possesses. I wanted it for the DDR ram, but not for the RAID.

What are the Pros and Cons of RAID technology??

Raid...

Cons:

Windows 9x kernel doesn't support Raid.
Requires multiple drives

Pros:

Redundancy of mission critical data
Faster access times over multiple drives (Raid-0)

While I have your attention, What is the advantage of gobs and gobs of memory??? I was thinking about getting That specific mobo for the DDR RAM, and Getting WinXP so that I could utilize it. But what is tha point??? Isn't 512 megs OK for the most part???

I just came off a RAID 0 setup, and I can tell the difference. Is it worth it? If you don't have another HDD I wouldn't go out and buy one just for RAID 0. If you need redundancy then it's absolutely worth it. In the end, you have to weigh the good and the bad.

I have A second HDD, but didn't see the reasons for it. I am happy with what i have, but when I get a new board, the options are:

K7T266 Pro2-RU and

K7T Turbo Limited Edition-R

I definetely want the 4 IDE ports, and Gobs and gobs of memory sound nice too, but I don't want to be forced into RAID if I don't have to

Is your data mission critical? Do you need the ability upon HD failure to swap it out, replace and go? I doubt you do... I doubt you need RAID.

Gobs and gobs of memory certainly may sound nice but it will make no difference in performance. None. I am assuming here but it is probably a safe assumption... anything over 512 is nothing other than for show and a waste of $$ for you.

If you aren't utilizing the extra memory then there is no point in buying it. I'd reckon it is fair to say that a lot of the people in these forums filling up their memory banks for the sake of doing it, or to say they have it, are wasteful or uninformed.
