RAID questions

Hi,

I just got an ASUS K8V SE Deluxe mobo and I will install it with 2 WD 160GB SATA drives. I want to set them up in a RAID 0 configuration and have it be my boot drive. This board has both a Promise PDC20378 RAID controller and a VIA VT8237 RAID controller.

Can I boot from either controller? If so, which is the better controller? Does one offer better performance than the other?

Thanks for your help

You can boot from either controller and they're both good.
I've read many suggestions to always put your bootable raid on the via since it is on the main bus.

Ditto, both are good

You'll get a increase in write speed with the Promise but better read speed with the VIA. Mind you the differences between the 2 aren't that much.

I have this motherboard and have tried IDE RAID on the Promise controller before I got a pair of WD Raptors. The IDE RAID was fairly poor since both drives were on a single ribbon cable.

I initially put the Raptors on the Promise controller and the performance was not what I was seeing others post. I then moved the Raptors to the VIA controller and performance went up noticeably.

Here's an benchmark from the Promise controller w/ Raptors:
