RAID Question

My 8K7A+ should arrive tomorrow, I would like to run my 2 IBM GXP60 41gb 7200 drives under Raid0 (striping) so I get a performance boost, I also have a 30gb 7200 Maxtor that I use for backup, I am hoping that I can use fdisk to partition the new RAID Array to have a 30gb partition for downloads etc, is this possible (will fdisk partition a 2-disk raid array?)

Cheers

yes, once you setup your array, fdisk will see it as one 80gb drive, then you should be able to partition it like any other drive.

Partitioning the array will not slow it down at all. It will simply create a half size partition on each of the drives and then when you read/write to that partition it will put half in each of the half size partitions. It will work just like a partitioned single drive, just faster.

Excellent, just what I wanted to hear, will I notice a real difference with the raid? (have just 1 GXP60 41gb at the moment)

Partitioning ussually makes it a bit faster. I like to limit my paritions to 4 gbs each...but I dont use much space. You will be able to tell a difference either way, but how much depends on what you do. If you do alot of file transfering or anything heavy on the hdd you will definatly see a huge increase. But if you just do everyday stuff, you will be able to tell a bit of a difference(atleast I did) but not a huge increase.
