Raid Question

I have two hard drives, dvd, cd burner and an internal zip drive.

In order to use all five devices, I would need a raid mobo, correct?

If I don't want to stripe or mirror my drives, what do I do?
In other words, I want the two drives to just be two seperate drives ( C: and D: )

You will need some sort of a solution that will allow you to have four devices. It does not neccessarily have to be RAID (that usually costs more) it could just be a second set of IDE controllers (this is somewhat rare but you can find it occasionally) or buy an IDE controller card (I think they are like $30) that fits into one of your PCI slots. You can put both of your hard drives onto this controller card and then have the other devices on the motherboard.

Is it possible to use the Raid Mobo as 8 seperate IDE devices and NOT implement RAID arrays of any kind?

I believe most of the RAID mobos allow you to do that type of thing.

You can just a get a normal motherboard and cheap Promise Ultra ATA100 Controller, I think for around $25 or so.
Setup the two hard drives and two CD Drives on the motherboard controller, and the Zip on the Promise controller, with room for 3 more drives later on.

Plus the non RAID motherboard might be significantly cheaper.

You could either opt for a secondary EIDE controller or go for a motherboard with RAID controller and just not implement RAID 0 or 1. This would allow you to use your two hard disks as two separate drives (C and D). There is little point in investing in EIDE RAID unless you are going to use it, but it will solve your problem of running out of EIDE connections. If your drives support UDMA66 or 100 make sure you purchase the appropriate controller and cables.
