If I were to have a raid 5 configuration and I had some drives with data on it, and I wanted to add the drives to the configuration, would I first have to moves the files over to the raid, and then I could then incorperate the other 2 drives into the raid by rebuilding it? Need some clarification.
 
You would need to copy the files over, then incorporate the drive, I think.
What are you using?
hw or sw RAID? and which brand?
 
As aboved said, which brand.. to be safe, I should ghost image out and build raid and ghost image in.

Some brand lets you add on to existing raid but it does a on the fly conversion, slowing your system to an hault..
