RAID performance tweaking kk266r and other on board raid

irrigating

Senior member
I have read of some expectations of raid performance not being

realized by some, mainly raid 0, so here is a thread.

Todays faster drives do not show much performance increase at default

64kb stripe sizes. Manually set the stripe to 32kb or smaller (ami

controller currently cant be set any smaller, the promise can, but

try 32kb as a starting point.

DMA is auto selected in the ami bios, check for DMA settings with

other cards.

Enable the write cache in the ami bios.

Format your file system to a value smaller than the default 64 in

windows fat 32. I used partition magic to do this after a regular fat

32 installation and it made it easier to go back and experiment with

other sizes later. I found 16 to be a good compromise.

So I think 32/16 is ideal with win98. Your cpu usage will go up,

smaller stripe sizes require the contoller to do more work.

Any comments, corrections, additions?

The ami controller on the kk266r seems to be using 20% cpu utilization according to HD tach.

A promise fastrack66 I have uses less than 10%.

Does anyone remember an article in Maximum Pc with similar results when they did ide raid

comparisons?
