Raid or no Raid..?

K, I currently have 2x160gb Seagate SATA drives running in Raid-0. I am now upgrading to a new motherboard and all the other good stuff too, so I will have to kill this array and start over again. I was wondering if I should go back to the Raid-0 or not..?

I use my computer for everything, occasional encoding, lots of gaming, streaming media to my xbox, office work, homework, a little bit of video editing from my vid camera....I know when I went to the raid setup my load times had decreased for windows and map loading. I'm not sure if it is worth the trouble, although this is the first time I have had any trouble in over a year of having it, but I hate that I have to wipe out my near full 280gb partition just because I am changing to a new motherboard and raid controller.

I just need help deciding to go back to a Raid-0 configuration or not...and I do plan on keeping this new motherboard for at least another year, so I shouldn't be plagued by this again soon..

Well, by the tone of your post I would say no.

You'll still have the same capacity with two separate drives.

No worries about data loss. (At least due to a RAID failure)

No hassle with the next mobo change.

Have I made up your mind yet?

Raid 0 just isn't worth the rist most of the time. I would say just stick with seperate drives.

I have 6 drives and 4 are two pairs that are identical and I could easily RAID them. To me the small performance increase is not worth the hassle or increased risk to run RAID 0.

Yeh, I agree....but the fact that I have had no problems in over a year with my current array just sways me a little to keep the raid up and running. Anyone know the performance difference between map loading in WC3(specifically DotA maps) or WoW...maybe even BF1942? I know my system as of right now is fastest loading all of these between my friends and mine, and we all have very similar systems. I have 512mb more than one friend, and my friend with a raptor and 1gb ram is the only one that even comes close to my load times...is it the raid that is giving me the faster load times, or possibly the extra memory?

Both. However, you are twice as likely to experience a complete volume failure than he is (give or take).
